Utmost respect for those that can fly with flight assist off

I tried to complete the second combat scenario against the unshielded Sidewinder with flight assist off. It did not end well as this video will show.

To complete a full combat with the assist off is difficult to say the least. My hat goes off to all those that are proficient with FA-Off. I think these are the Elite pilots out there.

Hopefully one day, with a bit of practice, I will be able to be counted as one of you.

Its not difficult really...you just need one of these..

It's a good idea to train this anyway. I don't think it's interesting full time, but it's good to have a better notion of how FA off behaves. I will probably do the same kind of exercices.

The only requirement is to practise FA Off on an empty stomach !

It does look like a battle of drunk pilots ! :D

An awesome show of perseverance.

I have found using the flight assist intermittently to help stabilise flight for an attach run works well at least vs npcs.

Were you using track ir or something to look around?

Now we are showing our age! Ghost in the machine was a little silly sometimes.. with that amount of tech in your hands, you'd think there would be at least a serial port for that sort of interaction even in the nineties!

I always fly FA off and only use Mouse and Keyboard.
It is true you need to make lots of adjustments per second multiple times to keep everything stable.

:)

FAOFF is effective in bursts, to get round asteroids etc and especially when you are hunting someone, but I can only use it in short bursts, and when making elementary manoeuvres.

It might be hellish difficult but it really shows the flight model off well. With the track IR as well it is amazing

Hey, give the poor guy a break. Not all robots come bundled with Xinput õ__õ

You're able to follow a target fine, but you can't keep a bead on him with your guns. You keep overcorrecting - I think the issue might actually be your input device. Maybe too sensitive to input and moving further than you want, or not sensitive enough.

What I see reminds me of a thumbstick user. Games with thumbstick input devices like Halo lack the kind of precision you get from a mouse, and so use autoaim to help correct for that. Good players take all this a step further and use their own avatar's motion to negate some of the angular velocity of their target - for example, sighted at someone running perpendicular to you, you would run in parallel with them, and make minor adjustments with the aimstick. This way you can be more precise with less drastic movement.

Flightsims also tend to experience this, and one of the ways its compensated for, is by 'pulling gees' on your target - using and matching your maximum turn rate to keep your aim steady on the target for at least long enough to pull a shot. (http://youtu.be/trMzUhzVlFY?t=13m7s)

My advice would be to grab some gimballed weapons.

Ya, sure you do. Start cranking out those vids of you in a high intensity warzone with FA off, choose the side with fewer human players. Educate us. Will be looking forward to your videos.

Op, use of FA off is a must in firefights to make violent maneuvers, but keeping it off 24/7 as some have alluded is nonsense and I will call it. I have played around with FA off in asteroid fields and having to correct constantly takes up too much time you could be using to do other things like actually fighting and flying.

it makes no sense to use the majority of your time fighting your own ship by making constant corrections.

..So I guess an XBOX 360 controller won't cut it for FA Off? :(

I was hoping of playing with a controller rather than a joystick, as I neither have the room for one or ever been comfortable with using one.

Your video appeared in my youtube feed directly next to a video of Isinona destroying 2 Cobra's in a Sidewinder with FA off. The difference was amusing ;)

Nice of you to share despite the unfortunate end.

I have only just begun playing around with FA off and it would definitely be nice if people could get together for some advice on how to do combat in that mode.

My initial reflections include an insight that putting more power to your engines is a good thing. Mostly because it recharges the boost quicker. Using the boost seems to stabilise the ship (probably due to a sudden strong impulse in the direction you are pointing your ship). This has worked favourably for me. In your example I would think it would allow you to handle the situation at the end. You seem to end up in a short range joust by noticing you are in trouble and boosting past your opponent... problem is you do not have an engine strong enough to turn and counter the motion until your opponent is also turned around. With full power to the engines you can influence your direction more strongly and if you save up you can do 2 boosts almost directly after one another, which mean you could use one to boost past, then another to turn and boost towards the enemy.

Now, I may be totally wrong (complete newb on Elite in general and FA off in particular), but this is how it seems to me.

Also, if you want a bit of an easier time to begin with, I would recommend "Recon wing" combat session. It has a missile launcher anda gimballed laser of some kind, which allows you to focus more on just keeping distance and less on fine aiming. Just, keep from brute force spamming them all to death on the initial pass so you get a bit of an actual fight going.
