Utter Horror moment, Dont push that button , yes the one without the warning sign on.

 Oh MY ,,, Nooo,, how ,, !! wHY!!! the humanity of it. i just had a terrible moment.
I'm sure there was a similar thread somewhere which i couldnt find just now,, about a bad mishaps etc.. but not quite like the moment i had i think.
There i was in my nice Python, Its a nice thing,, not full on combat,, but i run it at present spec for armed transporting, self protection. a nice 176 ton capacity and ability to kick a pirate or three back to whence they came.
i was working on gaining some faction rep,, i need those promotions to get access to the ships. ( empire ) , doing missions as they come,,, run some cargo here,, trade data there. smuggle this and that, shoot a few pirates.
now with 176 tonnes capacity,, it can be nice to bulk stack around 6 missions or so in each run. Along with maybe whatever each station has to trade. may as well combine all available profit gains as well as reputation.
Slaves they wanted,,, hmm,, thats not really in my morality,, smuggling fine i will do that all day ., but darn,, this station has just that one run to do.... why not,, theyre all empire,
theyre wanting them shipped to the next system i'm heading to so i turn a blind eye.
8 tonnes of them,,, poor folk,,, ok just hide them along at the back,,, they can go along with the trade data,, atmospheric processors,, uranium, food cartridges, clothing, consumer tech, water purifiers, domestic appliances, you name it,, i had a range of everything,,, 8-20 tonnes of most cargo,, buy it cheap,, sell it pricey. there was 20 tonnes space left,, my downfall. :(
heading to my next trade dock,, up pops a weak signal source. Interesting... maybe this could be a little more profit,, and hey.,. i have the room. in i dropped to investigate. derelict with tech blueprints floating nearby,., nice.

Now at this point, i would with hindsight loved to have had collector limpets,, could have salvaged something far easier. but no,.. pop open the cargo hatch and shovel them in. its only 5 or so blueprints.
Leaning over in the cockpit of my ship to hit the open the cargo hatch button, i found i had hit another button,, not the one i was looking for,, just next to it. End.
and things did END. oh gawd.. what had i done,., why was that there... why would you have a JETTISON ALL CARGO button. Without a safety lock , i didnt even know there was a jettison all button in my ship.
In horror i watched as 8 tonnes of poor slaves were jettisoned in a cloud about my ship along with 168 tonnes of various appliances, minerals, medicines, and everything.

quick realisation,,, i must salvage it all,, fast,,, no,,, too much,, they will degrade far quicker than i can collect!>. ok foget the trade goods,. the Slave mission. at least i must save them, if just not to fail the mission at least.
All was in vain, as a cloud of cargo now was engulfing my ship exploding containers impacts and screams, i had managed to collect up 4 tonnes of cargo,, destroying far far more in the process, along with those poor slaves.
What was that END key,,, well it ended a lot there in that moment. i hit it again,, why keep 3 tonnes,, clean the hold out..
Heading back to a starport to remove that little button from config. pretend that incident didnt happen, and have another beer,,
Woah,,, It really was a bad day. hope you dont have the same problem ,, or you had a bad day experience worse than this ??:)

Hahaha, I can just see this trail of cargo with you powerless to stop it after your small but not insignificant error. I do feel for you but at least you gave me a laugh (at your expense or am I laughing with you? You must have seen the funny side now seeing as you've posted your story for all to see :) ).

That was a long post just to say you accidently jettisoned all your cargo.

But sorry to hear it!!

Unbind that key!

Yep. Been there. Stupid setting. Unbound END long ago. Maybe one day when I have a maxed out conda with a 30mill re buy I might put it back. But only if pirates become so SJA that it's the last chance way to escape them.

ah,, glad i'm not the first to have done that,, and no doubt wont be the last..
But to say the least , its been an adventure and experience and makes a good addition to my Spacebook journal. Cmdr Panpiper.
Soon will foget about this incident and turned out all well, got the promotion from Empire to Master and can test fly the Courier later on. Will get back to exploring rather than fetch and carry missions which are a chore.
Already have a target wolf raynet in mind to document which has been calling me for the last day and only a few hundred LY's from the bubble

Did that yesterday in my python as well.
Mining in HI RES got 140 tons of precious metals (gold, platinum, palladium and 25 tons of painite)
Then I wanted to zoom out the radar, pushed END and my cargo worth over 2mil floating everywhere... I still got around 20 limpets so I tought I will collect the limpets and then use them to collect metalls but all the limpets were destroyed upon jettisoning all cargo.
I managed to pick up 4 tons of painite manually and was so angry that I shot the floating cargo and also rammed it with my ship

Lesson learned, unboud the jettison all cargo from controlls

Fantastic story.. enjoyed reading and laughed considerably. (it's the way you tell it!)

I hit that button once by mistake, luckily only had a couple of things I didn't even know were in there.

I quickly re-bound that evil key to the Minus key on my Numpad... Faaaaar away from everything else!

Thanks for sharing, and take some rep for being a champion and laughing it off. ;)

You are not alone. Happened to me long time ago with rare goods in a Cobra. It did hurt me at that time and of course I did unbind that hellish key.

Thankfully I noticed the binding and removed it before anything bad happened. But I did have a few accidents with silent running when turning on the lights, so I moved that one too.

There are a few things in ED you have to be careful with, and that need a better warning sign.
such as this, how easy is it to accidentally sell your ship.

I remember driving a campaign some months back to raise awareness of the dreaded "Jettison Cargo" button and prompt CMDRs to unbind it as quickly as humanly possible.
Or at least to bind it to somewhere on the other side of the keyboard.

I suffered the somewhat common fate of "My 1-yr-old co-commander decided to 'help' by pressing the big red button..."
Ahem!

My Grandson has worked out where the boost button is, he creeps in I see this little hand come up and press the boost on my Hotas. Fortunately I am exploring, so it doesnt work in SC.

I had this happen to me once trying to do a salvage mission :D

I took a screenshot then proceeded to deploy my multi-cannons and shooting all my cargo. Screw picking up 404 tons of cargo :p
