Variant of ships, Star Citizen style?

I've been browsing SC site and remarked that some ships are offered with multiple variant

F7C hornet : civilian close support (whatever that is)
F7C-S ghost : infiltration
F7C-R : scout
etc...

Although, knowing how modular ED ships already are (at least for multipurpose ships) I wonder if variants SC style would make sense.

I would however love if ED customization allowed more freedom. Give people the ability to mount a class 5 FSD on a cobra for example, with the loss of 2 class 4 module space as a trade-off...

In the star wars universe, pilots often customize their ship that way. I think Han Solo did customize the millenium falcon and had to sacrifice some things so that it would be faster and maneuverable than a regular YT1300...

No offense, but please stop trying to turn Elite into the other games. While we all appreciate the other space ships out there, Elite is unique in its own right and in time I'm sure there are plans for bigger better faster, within the elite realm.

No, I don't think that SC-style variants make sense with the modularity of ships in ED.

More customization: I think that would be nice, but not to the degree that how you customize your ship matters more than what ship you are flying.

I'm not really sure SC is fleshed out enough to even gauge how their ships will work. Most of the variants matter insofar as how the weapons are set up. Everything else is speculation. But, as I understand it, the variants are just the base ship with different modules. In that way, Elite already does that.

First we actually need the prime versions of the ships in this game before you start thinking about variants or whatnot. :)

Topic should be on freeze for couple years I think...

Game already has variants.

I am in a Trader variant Python, but could easily make it into a Combat variant Python. Same goes for my Clipper, Cobra and quite a few others. The Anaconda has a super long range explorer variant, which sacrifices a lot to get it like that, but can also be made into a battleship or even pure trader.

Some ships have fewer or no variants though, like the Fer-de-Lance, where killing is her business, and business is good.
