General Velocity Vector Indicator - and maybe new flight/HUD mode :]

I love flying in 6DOF, and the immersion and detail Elite offers is incredible. But it's missing something. A velocity vector indicator is a tiny addition that could add utility and immersion to many aspects of the game involving spaceflight, without bridging too far into "hard milsim" realism. I know it's been requested before, but it would be a desperately cool addition, ESPECIALLY if more terrestrial interaction is planned in 2025 in, say, colonization efforts. :]

A Velocity Vector Indicator (VVI) is a small carat usually displayed in the craft's HUD that indicates the craft's flight path in reference to a fixed point. Some add a kind of "amplitude" line to indicate the velocity being traveled along that vector. It's a quick visual reference for military pilots to judge (in addition to flying by feel, aka the "seat of the pants sensation") how the craft is actually traveling, and it can save them from undercorrecting and smacking into a canyon wall, for example. Helps you maintain the craft in controlled flight. In spaceflight, a VVI could clue you in as to whether you're at a dead stop, losing advantage in a turning dogfight, or holding the PERFECT cold orbit against a Thargoid interceptor. This is especially critical in FA-off applications where micro-corrections to your craft's velocity vector can quickly devolve to fighting the ship instead of the enemy.

Currently I use my D-Scanner carat in analysis mode as a static indicator of where my nose is pointed. It's a quick and dirty replacement for a true dynamic VVI, because I can at least use it as a fixed point to see my vector changing while docking at stations to keep from bunging the toast rack in my Corvette. BUT...add in any other variables (e.g. the pressure of combat, the precision of hooning) and it's all but useless (plus, you won't be in analysis mode during combat).

Tl;dr: please add a dynamic VVI as an optional HUD element while flying in Elite Dangerous. You could switch it off in the ship tab if you hate it, but it adds a touch of realism and a ton of utility, especially in FA-off applications.

You have the space dust as a vector indicator.
However, if you have removed that one with a mod, then there are visual cues in how your POV shifts and moves in the cockpit.
Been flying in FA-off for a veeeery long time (around 4k hours), never felt the need for a VVI.
Just practice, practice, practice until you get the feel for it.

Also, yes it has been asked not only once but several times, and never been added, so I wouldn't expect anything to be added anytime soon.

What Hellfire said is true; been asked for for years (or a decade) and never got anywhere. I hate the space dust and used to use a mod but now I just try to ignore it unless I read something here about space dust, then I see it again. Its simply not realistic unless you're flying around in or near planetary rings or asteroid fields; in deep space no dust.
Most of the many space games I played before ED (way back when) had vector indicators and I found them very useful when flying 6dof. another opinion like my ahole that probably stinks to some ppl

Played a ton of ED a few years ago then switched over to SC around '22. Having a velocity indicator in FA-off (uncoupled, they call it) is very, very useful when low-flying on planets or around space terrain like asteroids, large wrecks, stations, etc. Yeah, I can see flying by feel, especially if that's what you're used to, but the number of times I narrowly avoided being killed, especially by other players, while skimming a hair away from protective terrain is too high to count.

Space dust is also not available near stations. I noticed this, because I've come to depend on it. This trick here would be to come up with something that's not visually obtrusive. A couple years ago when I started playing ED and looking into flying FA-Off, I watched through all of Isinona's videos. Some of them had indicators in the HUD for speed along the different axes. I suspect they were removed because they were kind of ugly, and may have confused some players. I would love to have some kind of indicator, though. Something that is only visible when assist is off (or when the ship is not aligned with its velocity vector) to avoid clutter or confusing people who don't want it. Something like the lines that appear in SC would be enough, and subtle enough to easily readable without being ugly.
