Velocity Vector indicator

Who goes out and drives a truck without the right tools to make the job safer and easier? I think having a centre indicator is no different to fitting a vehicle with side mirrors. I wouldn't consider looking in mirrors while driving cheating.

In fact, if I'm piloting something as big as the Type-9 I'd half expect some kind of proximity indicator for going through the docking entry. (For that matter, if it was real, I'd expect the docking entry to be circular... The Health and Safety dept. would go nuts as it is now :) )

I do agree that some kind of offline tutorials for basics such as docking would be a good idea.

I agree with the proper use of tools. When flying your center view is very valuable real estate and adding uneeded aids creates clutter and reduces pilot performance. Players tend to ignore training and use the figure it out as I go method. Adding relief that aids this method only hurts the overall experience. To fly a the type 9 should take training and skill...its huge and if there were aids and ques floating all around your view how will you appreciate the game since the primary focus would be on lining up dots and boxes? What about that other ship your on a colision course with...now we need an indacator for that, oh no we are not on the same plane as the space port...another indicator.
I fear a snowball effect that removes the skill and forces the player to only focus on checking boxes and lining up indicators. Some aids are useful but most are perifery at best.

Well, there is an indication for a collision course, actually. And I disagree that it's undeeded. I mean, you have an indicator where you weapons will hit, and that doesn't reduce pilot ability, why would a VVI?

Yeah, in combat, the VVI could be really annoying, but there is a center view dot when weapons are deployed anyway. Maybe the HUD is the different between a navigation master mode and a combat master mode.

I reckon that the HUD needs 2 additions.

One is an centered view indicator, so you know where you ship is pointing (outside of opening hard-points). This is pretty easy in standard view but seems to get tricky when playing with TrackIR or other head motion trackers.

The second is a velocity vector indicator. ?

Yes. I've mentioned the same thing in another thread, but these two indicators are sorely needed. I don't think we need a VVI, as someone mentioned, but it'd sure be nice to know which way I'm pointed, and which way I'm going :).

I am still surprised that there is not a Velocity Vector Indicator at this point. Any flying machine with a HUD has one. Must have one.

When you turn off the assists it is very easy to lose track in which direction you are moving. Moreover when you have thrusters that can make your ship move in two axis while you are rotating in another two.

Trusting the direction you are moving to floating space dust is not just unrealistic, it is plain silly.
Also the speed indicator should tell you your speed for each axis, not just the forward one. Evochron Mercenary does that very well. Even SC and KSP have a Velocity Vector Indicator.

I just hope it is there before the final release.

It would make sense to have a velocity vector indicator on the radar screen. Having it on the HUD would not be very effective or intuitive, I think. Just add an arrow pointing from the center of the radar towards the current vector.

The second is a velocity vector indicator. This is less of a problem at high speed as the the "Space Dust" does the same thing, but can be a bit tricky at low speeds. Maybe this only pops up when the gear is lowered, but I reckon this would be really useful in helping nubs get through the slot on the stations.

Whatcha think, Commanders?

I agree. Toggle option.
