Who goes out and drives a truck without the right tools to make the job safer and easier? I think having a centre indicator is no different to fitting a vehicle with side mirrors. I wouldn't consider looking in mirrors while driving cheating.
In fact, if I'm piloting something as big as the Type-9 I'd half expect some kind of proximity indicator for going through the docking entry. (For that matter, if it was real, I'd expect the docking entry to be circular... The Health and Safety dept. would go nuts as it is now)
I do agree that some kind of offline tutorials for basics such as docking would be a good idea.
I agree with the proper use of tools. When flying your center view is very valuable real estate and adding uneeded aids creates clutter and reduces pilot performance. Players tend to ignore training and use the figure it out as I go method. Adding relief that aids this method only hurts the overall experience. To fly a the type 9 should take training and skill...its huge and if there were aids and ques floating all around your view how will you appreciate the game since the primary focus would be on lining up dots and boxes? What about that other ship your on a colision course with...now we need an indacator for that, oh no we are not on the same plane as the space port...another indicator.
I fear a snowball effect that removes the skill and forces the player to only focus on checking boxes and lining up indicators. Some aids are useful but most are perifery at best.
