General / Off-Topic Vendetta Online

Has anyone played Vendetta Online?

For those that don't know about it, it's an online space fighting/trading mmo, with twitch combat similar to the ED concept. From reading the forums, it sounds like it's a reasonable game that is a bit let down a little by lack of players.

I haven't played it yet, but was thinking if a few of us signed up we could have a bit of fun while we wait for the real thing.

There's a free trial, then requires a monthly sub. Anyone want to give it a try?

I played it in late Alpha/early Beta

Very Elite like (most space sims seem to be!), it's pretty good but I didn't really have the time to get deeply into it (I was still heavily into WoW at the time). ;)

EDIT

Probably shouldn't be posted in this bit of the forum though, as it's not about ED ;)

I can't remember why I didn't get into it years ago, but I didn't.

Downloading it again, the interface is pretty dated and a bit confusing, it doesn't like triplehead setup (which is enough to put me off), and the tutorial is incorrect in places (the weapons, tabs, and initial missions are labelled incorrectly with respect to the tutorial text, but you can spot the correct one by clicking around the place).

I'll give it a go on a different machine for the trial hours as it seems to have reset my account, but it's not worth $10 per month (or $9/8 for 3/6 months) imho.

BTW - they've just launched a $100k Kickstarter to get it onto iOS devices (it's already on Win/Mac/Linux/Android). (I thought that'd be against the Kickstarter TOS as it's not a new product really, but I guess it's ok).

It's an "okay" game, it's got everything you would expect from a standard implementation modern space sim, but nothing that goes above or beyond the call of duty. Nowhere near good enough to justify a monthly subscription model in this day and age. Better MMO's have been forced to give in to the f2p model, so it's not hard to see why Vendetta doesn't have a lot of players.

The graphics and GUI/hud, reminds me alot of freespace, I wonder if it somehow uses the same engine as i know there was a mmo concept for a freespace mod years ago.

I think it has a lack of players for a reason.

Perhaps.. But at the very least it would give people an understanding of what works and doesn't work in a space fighting MMO. From the comments on the forum it seems there is not a lot to do after you've been playing a while, so people drop off.

It seems when they do get a lot of users online simultaneously, it is quite fun.

I play Vendetta online. It's fun from a gameplay point of view.
Just turn off global chat and it's ok. Not that it is full of spammers or anything it is not. I just find global chat irritating.
The main thing that lets it down for me is the ambient lighting. Even with the gamma turned all the way down it is difficult to feel that it is a space game.
As for the subscription I think that helps avoid the common curse of F2P.
As soon as you go F2P you get all sorts of players who just want to... well, not really play the game. F2P games are often like playing chess with 2 million people who just want to throw the peices around and tell fart jokes.

Hey, Phaserlight here, I've been a part of the Vendetta Online community for 9 years, and I would be glad to answer any questions about the game or the Kickstarter.

The sub is currently $10 for 1 month, but it goes as low as $6.67 per month if you buy in longer increments. The KS has some rewards that include access to the game; you can currently get up to 20 months for $50, which is a pretty good deal. This is a limited tier, however. The devs are also considering adding a "Lite" subscription option for as low as $1 per month. I understand the primary goal for the Kickstarter is to expand gameplay, although the iPad/iOS port were hilighted in the press release. Vendetta Online has a long history, and although I find it's gameplay to be rock-solid, the 4-man team did not have the kind of marketing support a brand new company needs to really take off, and they have been basically keeping their company alive through word-of-mouth and by the community. The Kickstarter is a real chance to make some big gameplay advances happen.

If you are interested in Vendetta Online, I recommend giving the free download (220 MB) and the free trial a try. You get 8 hours that you can use at any time once you leave the starter area. That means you can play 1 hour one week, 3 hours the next week etc. Toward the end of your trial you may want to ask another user for a 2-week friend key that will extend your trial time. At least try this much before deciding if you will support the Kickstarter.

I guess it's because I've been playing for a while, but the interface doesn't detract from the game for me at all. It fills the screen when you are docked at a station or when you bring your PDA up, but you can still see stuff going on in the background (one of my suggestions). When you are launched, it is very minimal compared to many other MMORPGs, and displays only the bare essentials. There are many hotkeys you can use to navigate, and the UI is entirely skinnable, as well. I wouldn't recommend worrying about plugins or skins until you have at least a few months experience with the game, however.

I'm not sure where the errors in the tutorial are... I played through the tutorial and training missions recently and didn't find any (except maybe one spelling error). However, feel free to post a report to the bugs forum if you find something that needs clarification or something that is incorrect. Most of the playerbase is very helpful, also.

There are a lot of long-term gameplay goals to pursue; you can find a brief description here in the Wikipedia article. I actually wrote that section, as it stands today.

In summary, I've found it to be an amazing experience that has occupied most of my gaming time for nearly a decade, and I highly recommend giving the free-trial a go before taking a look at the Kickstarter.

On re-reading my previous post it comes across as a little negative, that was not my intention.
My experience with the game-play of Vendetta online has been pretty much entirely positive. I tend to play solo and that works fine, I guess there are benefits to group play as there always is I don't know. But I can say the solo experience is fun. The few times I have been involved in PvP it has been fun. Part of the fun for me is not knowing if I am going to be attacked while hunting bots or going into a station or travelling to a wormhole.
The actual flight model is good too. Skill counts for a lot in combat.
:)

I barely played it (2 hours so far) and did PvE combat, exploring, mining and trading. Never caught an ion storm yet. ;) It is fun, I like the flight model (except the high acceleration rate of the two ships I have so far (the E-89 and the Revenant I think (bad at names))).

The people at the global chatroom (100) were nice in helping newbies taking the first steps.

Pros:
+ flight model and PvE combat (6 DoF) :)
+ how mining works
+ how trading/prices works
+ how PvE works (hive swarm, no serious threat for beginners in start system)
+ mission system
+ easy made freeform exploration due to the excellent map with descriptions
+ chat system and the community I had contact with
+ the easy to understand module system of ships
+ trading/mining/exploration fits for playing on the phone, too (Android)

Cons:
- division of the systems into sectors
- arbitrary 3000m limit to exit a sector (yes it's needed somehow, but I'm kind of spoiled from the LDS drive in I-War)
- graphical design/fonts of the UI (its practicability is excellent though, e.g. shortkeys everywhere!)
- no cockpits :D

Didn't tested PvP so far but due to the flight model I can imagine it is fun.
Didn't checked its mod-ability.

It has a 8 hours trial, so it is free for everyone to test it.
