Maybe this for a starter: I play in VR. That might bias me slightly, but:
When I started playing ED a few thousand hours ago, I basically had one goal. The Mamba
I hauled passengers in a Dolphin until I could afford an AspX, that I used for "Road to Riches" and later core mining until I could afford the Mamba. That was sort of my personal end game back then.
Today I own several Mambas. One is the first one I bought, and after honking around the galaxy listening to Verity, I thought that "Verity" would be a good name for my new Mamba. Then I started figuring out how to unlock those drag drives.
I never liked the Mamba as a combat ship, but once she's fully engineered, she flies "just right". She's not the most agile ship, nor is she the fastest, but she's very welly balanced, if your goal is to fly some sort of "drivers car" spaceship (mostly in VR I guess). Kind of like the 1970's Chevy Corvette you take for a spin on a Sunday.
I took Verity to Sag A* once, not because she has a particularly good jump range, but because I knew that going there would be special, and therefore I wanted to enjoy the trip and share it with Verity. I did not regret that, even though it was a lot of jumps and scooping.
These days Verity is slimmed down for speed and jump range. I have offered 4 ly of jump range to bring a SRV, have a shield and an AFMU which I didn't use for the Sag A* trip, but it is very handy when jumping neutron stars. Also, she's build for swoop scooping, so she can fill up the tank in 3-4 seconds, without breaking a sweat, and she can even charge the FSD while scooping.
I don't know how many Mamba owners use their Mamba like I do, but it's my favorite exploration ship, and I thought I'd recommend trying something similar, if you get tired of using the Mamba as a combat ship, and just want to go and look at the galaxy.
