Very civilised ...

What surprises me most (but not perhaps on reflection) is how damm *civilised* and polite these boards are...

I've been on quite a few forums (satellite TV, radio, phones and others) and these are by a long way the most helpful and constructive. So few trolls and so little flaming - and 99% of threads helpful. Amazing for the web!

I suppose it's down to the fact many / most of us have been around for a while and may be getting a bit long in the tooth (I know I am ...). Or just that we have a strong common interest?

Thoughts?

i think part of the reason is the age range of users, the kickstarter filed the forums with a load of 40+ aged users who dont put up with any crap.

we tend to debate the idea instead of the person, on other forums i've been a member of the reverse is often true and the person is the one attacked just for having the idea.

I think there's generally a low acceptance of poor behaviour here that is often normal elsewhere, and the mods do a pretty good job too.

Lead by example, and new forumites tend to be 'nice' too.

I'm going with the long in the tooth theory. Age may not give wisdom but it often at least gives manners. There seems to be a certain age at which being a jerk on the internet holds a great fascination.

Yes all you Brits are quite well mannered :). I play League of Legends, and those forums are HORRENDOUS. It's a whole new level of troll, partly because it's mostly the young age group players, and it's a free to play game, just a recipe for disaster.

We enjoy a high level of security, stability, and development here. Something that push most offenders away to those remote outposts, where they can get dirty and still feel like they blend in. We must remain vigilant though, they will always try to smuggle something shady into our midst. ;)

Seconded - I have backed a couple of games, and this one has been the most reasonable community, but most importantly, moderators.

Whilst I personally got into conflict with the mods there, I remember the issue where a female backer was banned for opening a thread about a female community and then got banned for being harrassed on the SC forums.

SOTAs moderating team are completely out of their mind, banning people left and right for factually wrong reasons etc...

A really nice and helpful community and moderating team here :).

We have a higher proportion of veterans than many game forums, I expect - see here.

I am not surprised by the number of veteran players; however, I am incredibly surprised at how few younger players there are. I guess the majority of us younguns don't care for the classics... And I'm only really jumping into the Elite universe with this game, I'm too young to have played the original Elite and Frontier games back in the day... But nevermind! I really enjoy this community, regardless of age. :D

Of all the forums I frequent, I must say that only the Bay12 forums gets close to being this civilized. Threads like the PvP one usually runs constantly and in numbers at many forums.

Well living in the USA I've always been impressed with the Brits per the use of the English language. Sometimes they talk too fast for me to understand but I work on it. Get a Welsh or Irish talking too fast and I have to slow the You Tube video down!

It is OK. I'm thinking maybe FD should have spent a little money and used the enormous talents in the USA to bring ED closer to completion years ago. Just an opinion. I know it was a money issue. Kickstarter made it happen.

I've found that at least in the US the midwesterners are the ones most likely to understand that Brits get *more* polite as they get ticked off. When an Englishman calls you "Sir" he isn't *exactly* being respectful, he's annoyed enough that he's about to plant his fist in yer snoot :)

For a message board about computer games this is indeed very civilized. However, I consider myself spoiled in that matter, since I am a member of the Snopes.com message board.

I'm not quite ready for the veteran tag, was only 2 when Elite first came out. But I think the kind of game FDEV are trying to make attracts a more thoughtful kind of gamer.

I also think that the solid base of the forum when ED was announced were good natured lunatics who treated newcomers well. Once you've got a good atmosphere, it's easier to keep it.

I'd like to thank all the old hands who made me feel welcome when PB started. I never normally get past lurking, I make an exception for this forum.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Way back last year sometime I remember making a thread about much the same - how mature the crowd here was in comparison with some other gaming forums. It's still the truth, too. It's a good bunch here.
