General / Off-Topic Very disappointed with the warthog throttle

Got mine today and already put it back in the box to return it.

The layout is extremly unconfortalbe, some switches are very difficult to reach
due to the on/off switches, the mapping possibilities are very limited. Also binding landing gear to one of these switches requires to turn it two times to retract and two times to deploy because each switch reacts only to the "on" position so you cant use "on" to deploy and "off" retract.
Also there are less buttons and switches compared to f.e. the x56 throttle.
Altogether that thing is not worth the 240€ I paid.

I ordered a virpil mongoose throttle now, will have to wait a few weeks longer to play ED again but it should be worth it.

In fairness, the on/off mapping issues are Elite's fault, not the throttle. Any toggle switch will perform the same way in the game unless Elite specifically supports a "hold" function for that command.

It made my preferred assignment of certain things in my set-up not possible, but I worked around it because FDev didn't seem to have any intention to address it.

That said, for things that do semi-officially support a 'hold' function in the game (such as firing weapons), toggling the switch to on and then off again in the assignment menu will allow you to simply turn that item on and it'll remain held. I've found that useful for the Pulse Wave Scanner, and so far, little else.

The Virpil won't be any better in that regard, unfortunately - because again, the limitation is Elite's - it's not the hardware. Best bet regardless is to find a momentary switch for mapping things like landing gear.

The only things I've been able to map to pure toggles in Elite are the cargo hatch, silent running, (by enabling "hold" in the control settings), and Primary/Secondary weapon fire as a backup. Everything else is assigned to a momentary. It's not quite what I originally had in mind, but it didn't take long to adjust.

Either way, enjoy your time in the game! I couldn't imagine playing it without a HOTAS.

I agree that the missing "hold" option is FD fault, strange that some actions have it while most don't.
What remains is the bad layout. Virpil did at least that better, judged by the pictures. If the x56 throttle would be offered as standalone, I would most likely have bought that, all switches on the throttle are "dead man switches", perfect for ED.

Also agree, ED without hotas feels wrong. That's why I will take a break until the throttle arrives.

You can replace the toggles with momentary switches on either the warthog or Virpil, not that you should need to do this.
Need to remember, those throttles were meant for more general flight sims, not Elite Dangerous. As Flying Brickyard said, the fault is Elite Dangerous for not supporting those throttles with hold functions.
If only the quality of the X56 throttle, especially the thumbstick, was anywhere near that of the Mongoos or Warthog throttles. It has about the most perfect layout for that game that I have used.

Edit : The Mongoos throttle grip with the X56 throttle base layout would be where it's at for me.

I want that throttle so bad, plus the virpil constellation alpha joystick, that I almost wish for my current X56 to die so I can justify buying them. :)
Boght the VKB Gunfighter Mk.III - MCG Pro joystick because it has a yaw axis, so no need for additional rudders. Virpil does not offer joysticks with integrated rudder.

The Constellation Alpha has twist axis. Check the lines on the right over the price: https://virpil-controls.eu/vpc-constellation-alpha-r.html ("All-Metal Twist Axis Mechanism with Lockout ")

I don't want pedals either, hate having stuff on the floor, so a viable axis for rudder is mandatory for me.

I have the Warthog throttle and have bound Flaps UP and Flaps M/R both to Gear, so it only requires 1 switch flip to do either.

I've used the same trick to bind the EAC and RDR ALTM switches to Scoop and Hardpoints as well.

In acse the switches get out of sync with the actual game I have them set to only work on one of the I/O positions with a switch that switches between I and O positions, so a quick flip of that switch and the renegage switch can be reset

You need to use the Target software for this.

I have the Virpil VPC CM2 Throttle and a Constellation ALPHA-R stick. The are a great combo for Elite but do require some setup with the Virpil software. You can set the red toggle switches on the Throttle to act like momentary switches. I use them for switching between hud modes, lowering and raising landing gear and Cargo scoop, and deploying and stowing weapons. I admit the Virpil software is not the most user friendly but you can change the behaviour of how the switches function. So you can set them to when you flip them then will momentary activate a press and then release when flipped.

This is why it doesn't make much sense to buy flight controls made to model the controls from an actual plane unless you are intending to use it for sims specific to that plane. They were almost certainly not designed with comfy ergonomics in mind, and in many cases certain features are likely designed to be uncomfortable to reduce accidental actuations. The build quality of the Warthog throttle is nice, but it is not going to work as well for flight games in general like a Virpil/VKB/etc would.

I admit the Virpil software is not the most user friendly...

It's much better than VKBs, don't be disappointed.

This is why I like the CH Throttle. It has no switches or other things on the base, yet it has what I feel is one of the best layouts for the buttons and analogue stick for any throttle I've seen. I never have to take my hand off the throttle to activate anything. I use the three finger-tip buttons on the the throttle act as shift-modifiers for a heck of a lot of stuff. I just wish the throttle was of better quality as I've had to repair the cabling inside at least three times in different places.

What I want is a throttle that has the layout of the CH Throttle with the build quality of the Virpil.

Or you could just use VoiceAttack.

I'm using a crappy Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. Things like landing gear and cargo scoop are voice activated, as is continuous fire with mining lasers.

The only thing I'd really like is a seperate and substantial throttle rather than the silly little flappy paddle on the 3D Pro. Preferably one with an indent between forward and reverse rather than having to use a button as I do now. Although thinking about it I could probably assign that to a VA command as well.

It’s a replica of the actual A10 HOTAS, just saying. The quality beside a few minor issues that can be fixed outstanding, mine is many many moons old and still like new, and I’ve been beating it like an energized bunny.
