Very noobish question about g-sync

I finally replaced my ageing 1440 BenQ with a 32in 1440 monitor that is g-sync compatible. The monitor can go to 170Hz but since I only have a GTX 1070 (8GB) I just selected 144Hz in the Nvidia control panel where I also selected it to use g-sync. - So my question is, in Elite's graphics options I assume I should select v-sync on and the appropriate refresh rate*? Is this correct? Cos with v-sync off the frame rate gets much higher so I presume that means it isn't then using g-sync.

So as I said, excuse the noobishness of the question, never been in g-sync land before.

* Why do the refresh rates in Elite graphics have such odd numbers? (143.86 instead of 144 for example.)

BTW - Only ran it in Horizons so far, very happy with frame rates there - not looking forward to the drop-off in Oddity.

refresh rate is the rate of your monitor, put it to 170
vertical sync must be in games off, and in nvidia drivers on ( otherwise you have double select.)
( make a nvidia profile for the game)
frame rate limit is the limit you wish the frames should go

vsync on will set the game to max fps of the refresh you set ie if you set refresh to your monitors refresh 170 then you max FPS will be 170.

if you want to limit the maximum FPS below this then set the frame rate limit lower ie 144fps, the game will then be limited to 144fps.

if your using a G-sync monitor you should in theory be able to run the game with Vsync off without suffering screen tearing, youll be able to see fps upto 170 without tearing, iirc if it goes over 170 then you may get tearing - with vsync of if you want to limit the FPS then set a FPS limit - this can be set either in game or nvidia control panel

using vsync and setting a lower FPS limit is usually used to improve overall FPS stability

if your making changes to vsync, you will usualy want to make this change either in game or nvidia control panel not both, its the same for most other graphics settings -either set in game or nvidia control panel - if setting in game, nvidia settings should be set to application controlled or off

refresh rates that your seeing in game is down to how that refresh is calculated, if your desperate for some bed time reading take a look here.. those numbers usualy get rounded to the nearest whole number.

That article assumes a hardware G-Sync module, but most of applies to G-Sync via Adaptive Sync that G-Sync Compatible displays feature.

On my NVIDIA parts I generally leave vsync off in-game and set to 'adaptive' in the NVIDIA driver profile for the game.

Why do the refresh rates in Elite graphics have such odd numbers? (143.86 instead of 144 for example.)

The game only shows what the OS has reported to it. Your display, or it's driver, is listing those refresh rates, and other sources are probably rounding it off.
