You can also use a wifi access point / wifi router instead of a dongle... After a move, my gaming computer wound up without a cabled connection (yet). I don't have a wifi dongle, but I did have a spare wifi router lying around. Hooked my computer up to that and set it to act as a gateway to my main wifi router (even on routers that don't support it, installing OpenWRT will often do the trick).
As for the ED, it does seem rater particular with regards to network usage. It's quite easy to saturate the bandwidth and kill ED performance. If you cannot or do not want to disable whatever is eating your bandwidth, you might be able to prioritize ED traffic (or your gaming computer's traffic) in your router setup.
