Newcomer / Intro Vidcap software?

Was wondering what people are using to do in-game video capture.

I did a search, found 13+ pages of threads, after looking at dozens of pages of posts could nit find what I am looking for. Sorry if this question has been answered 50,000 times already.

Thanks,

Stan

What video card are you running?

If it's fairly new, e.g. GTX7xx or newer, you should be able to record directly from the card. See Nvidia's Shadowplay feature, for example.

If you can't record, try FRAPS. I think this option will cause more of a performance loss than using hardware to record..

DXtory is a great program for recording. I used it when I had my AMD 6950 and was able to record games with no lag.

jackfrags on youtube has a great how to for the setup.

I have a GT 640 gpu, technically not supported by Shadowplay, but it does use the Kepler architecture that is required for it, so adding -shadowplay to the Geforce experience command line appears* to have enabled it.

* Shadowplay control panel opens, but have not tested it in game yet.

We'll see tomorrow.

I like the capture the last 5 min feature. Makes it easy when you just want to capture epic gaming moments. You don't have to dredge though hours of gameplay looking for those few moments of awesome.

I'm on ATI Radeon so can't have Shadowplay.
I tried Raptr but it won't recognise ED in the setup (there is a way by 'fiddling' but i couldn't get it to work).
Now i use MSI Afterburner v4.1.0 and the Lagarith Lossless Codec which seems to work well but more importantly enables me to overclock my GPU(s) and adjust the fanspeed curve to keep them cool under pressure.

i dont screen capture myself, but i have heard that microsoft expression is free to download now, that has a pretty decent screen capture and web optimised encoder, the rest of the package is meant to be pretty decent to. not sure if there is a capture duration cap on the SC, but it may be worth a look either way.

Unless you have a modern card that supports streaming/recording natively, your best bet is probably OBS (and even then, the quality of OBS is often better than that of the native systems). Even better, it's free!

It is a little fiddly to get into, but I can record on my 3-4 year old machine (i5-2500K and GTX570) at 1080p/30fps/7000kbps (game is running at 60+ - I haven't bothered checking specifically) without any issues, and stream at 720p/30fps/2000kbps (this is downscaled, native is still 1080p), again without any issues.

The thing to remember is to use game capture, not screen capture (at least for OBS).

DXtory doesn't like my machine for some reason so I use Bandicam (newest version) for most of my games. However, OBS is better for my ED experience because you can set it up to record only the middle display if you're playing with multi-screens enabled.

You mean as monitor capture? I wouldn't recommend that as it's very slow compared to game capture. The best way to do it is set it up for game capture then play the game in borderless window, that way you can run as many monitors as you like and it'll still capture the game at full performance.

OBS is the best program for me, by quite a distance. ShadowPlay and Raptr can't capture windows, only full screen so they are definitely out. Dxtory has pretty huge file sizes, ditto Fraps. Bandicam and others like it can't capture at different FPS to playing when generally you'd want to play at 60 fps and record at 30 fps unless using 60 fps YouTube of course.
