VIDEO: alternative targeting system against Cobra

Wow. After watching, I couldnt really see what was up, so I booted up my copy and gave it a shot.

WOW! This is how every game with lead indicator's should be. Well, at least the option. Its awesome! It feels so... right. I duno, it just jived with me a ton. The reticle intelligently moves to where you still aim at the ship, but off sets it self it compensate for lead. With it, my accuracy with the projectile weapon went way up. Much more intuitive. Instead of watching and tracking 2 things (the lead indicator, and the movement of the enemy ship), your just watching the other ship, and aiming at it.

+100 to FD for implementing this! I gata go tell all my friends! :p

This was the default method for a very long time and I made sure to get it implemented because I personally didn't want to use the age old lead marker trope seen in everything else. However I had to change it to be more traditional after Sandy figured it were too difficult to relate ship movement to what the HUD icon was doing and that people would expect the more traditional method they could immediately understand. Luckily I at least got to keep it in as an option.

When combining a projectile weapon and a laser this method must be the only way to play as you can fire both at the same time. Using the lead display method you would miss with 1 weapon or the other?

I will be switching to this method this evening as it gives a clear advantage.

PS nice video

There needs to be a keybinding to cycle gunsight modes also the "Trail from center" mode needs a static gun cross indicator (that plus symbol at the top center of this F16 HUD) in addition to indicate the pivot axis of your own ship, just like all modern combat aircraft HUDs have.

It doesn't combine, you would still have a separate gun sight for each and every weapon with a different lead time including lasers.

Oh sorry Mike my misunderstanding, thanks for clarifying, I will investigate this evening.

It still looks like my preferred method as why have these beautiful ships then spend all your time looking at a circle in space where they may be in a 0.5 of a second.

Exactly and the biggest reason I wanted it implemented this way in the first place.

OHHHHHHH!
I get it now (I had no idea what I was doing at the time :p). If the target is moving upwards, then the target reticule moves down, so when you put it over the ship you're aiming higher :)

I don't understand sorry.

The only way I have played it so far was with traditional sights so the target icon would lead the enemy ship by the appropriate amount and if you aimed there, after travel time you would hit the enemy ship.

How is this different please ?

ETA: are you saying that when you target a ship, rather than your crosshairs being smack bang in the middle of the screen and a receptacle moving about you instead see your crosshairs move about relative to the targeted enemy so as long as you have them on the enemy ship lead time is factored in ? If so ... That's quite cool.

I do believe this should be the default.

I think it would actually be easier to understand for new players, as the concept is very simple. The bullets will land where the crosshair is. That's the intuitive expectation of anyone using a crosshair for the first time.

Nice, it's the same principle you use to sight a bow or a scope. If you are shooting high, you move the reticule higher which makes you adjust your shot down. Very nice :D

Yes, the cross-hairs slide into a position that forces you to adjust appropriately.

Maybe a little "boresight" marker would fix that (e.g. a cross in the middle of the screen).

I think this method of aiming projectile weapons is superior to the current default in all respects, so I'm glad Mike made sure it was included. AFAIK Aircraft and anti-aircraft gun sights have worked like this since the early 1940's!

Yeah that's what I meant with the guncross in my previous post
