video card upgrades

o7 all. I have been considering up grading my gaming laptop to a newer one. My present laptop has a 1650 nvidia card. Seems to work fine, gets a little jumpy in open when there are a lot of cmdr's around. Probable my internet connection. Will I actually see a big difference If i get a unit with a 4070 card in it? Is there any place I could see the difference before I spend the bucks?

It won't do anything about your network connection with other players, so lag and strain on peer to peer connections will still be a thing with enough players in the instance.

You will absolutely notice a difference in the game between 2 laptops running those specific graphics cards though.

Thanks Dillon. I am hoping for faster rendering when doing exobio/exploration and improved vision when im doing ax and titan bombing.

As an idea of what you'll get, I run a 3080 (which is pretty comparable to a 4070) and I run the game at 1440p and all the other settings turned up to the maximum. With that I'll get between 60 -70 FPS in ground conflict zones, which I think is generally seen as the most demanding part of the game.

I also have an i7-12700kf CPU and 32GB of DDR4 RAM, so if the rest of the specs are anything like that (which they should be better than with a 4070 GPU) you should get what you're looking for.

The spec on your computer is about what I'm looking to buy with the 4070 video card. The one i have is an i5 and 24gb ram works ok. I found some side by side comparisons, The frame rates is vastly improved with the better card. I was surprised that the visuals weren't more noticeably better. I do love the ground combat. Still working on my triple elite one more to go. Combat / Deadly is almost complete.

That's not really the way ED is designed, the graphics will remain pretty much as they are, I mean you can turn off shadows and distance pop and things get blurry if you start messing with some settings in FSR but once you get up close to a bio it will look pretty much the same with any decent video card, but with a less powerful video card you will get fewer FPS, at least that's my experience. The 4070 is a decent vid card for the laptop though, my old laptop with a 2070 worked fine, the 4070 will make things a lot smoother although I recommend 32gb ram rather than 24gb.

Don't forget to check Bottleneck Calculator, to make sure that whatever video card you buy, it's a match for your CPU (and vice versa). Balance is good!

I switched from a 1660 Super to a 4070 (in a new computer I built) some time back, and the difference is very worthwhile.

I suppose that is a worthwhile check to see if the laptop's makers are doing their job right.

I got a PC with 4070 Super, 32GB Ram & i9 14900K. As long as my CPU doesn't fail because of the Intel/MB issues (I updated the BIOS with the recent patch), this should keep me going for a while. And Elite runs 4K Ultra ~60-70fps with 1.25 oversampling, which I'm plenty happy with, and is very stable in VR too, though I haven't looked at framerates for that, but it's definitely above 60fps. Now I just need more time to play.. lol.

Got a Ryzen 7800X3D, 32Gb ram and 4070 Ti Super and runs at 144fps everywhere, although that's only at 1440p, but it's very likely that's the res the laptop will be using unless the OP plugs into an external monitor, so I can't really see any problems with the 4070 in the laptop.

EDO is bottlenecked by CPU/memory subsystem performance at relatively low frame rates in some areas, and not at all in others. Blanket recommendations from sites like Bottleneck Calculator won't take specific titles or scenarios into account.

That said, most laptops, except at the extreme high-end, will be heavily balanced towards CPU performance. The cheapest laptops I see with an RTX 4070 have CPUs like the i7-13620H or Ryzen 7 8845HS, which are quite fast.

Get the best monitor you can, I recently upgraded to an oled, the visuals and clarity are far and above my old monitor. Get something with a really high black contrast and good pixel density and you love your self
