I'd love to play Rogue System and Children of a Dead Earth, but as they are only available on Steam and I rather manually castrate myself with my teeth than give Valve any money, I'll stick old-school sims for that sort of fix.

Try not to think about Valve instead focus on giving money to two VERY talented developers. I have both games and they are phenomenal. Also Rouge System is pretty much one man project, ignore steam share and think you supporting the only DCS level like indie space sim. Also, I use steam for about 10y - zero issues whatsoever.

Rogue System in itself, is worth putting up with Steam. I'm not a Steam fan, but lets be honest, how many games are on there now. Its hard not to have Steam these days. Which is sad, but that's life.
