Traditional first person movement is problematic in VR because it creates some pretty instant unease and can easily lead to nausea. The internal dissonance of visual cues indicating walking when in reality you're stationary is why you get motion sick. This is what the above video is trying to combat.

Elite has you sitting in a cockpit of a craft in a chair, the ship travels the world. The metaphor is different and so are the visual cues so it effectively tricks the brain to accept the motion. I've never come close to motion sick flying a ship in VR... though some people do catch a bit. A long bumpy SRV ride will get me though.
