Once, long ago, as a tender n00b and before I realized there was such thing as a self-destruct button, I wanted a quick return to the bubble (if memory serves, I was 5K out, unlocking Palin, but not interested in exploring at the time, and didn't want the mind numbing jumping trip back in a ship with fairly low jump range). So I decided to supercruise toward and then fly into a star to self-destruct. Given how much drama your COVAS (and smoking dashboard) inject into the amount of over-heating you see at a measely 110% of so, it's ridiculous how long it actually takes your ship to blow up as a result of over-heating.
I'm pretty sure it took almost 10 minutes of flying down into the star once I fell out of supercruise, and my heat was well over 400% before the ship finally gave up the ghost.
