[Video] Mamba vs FDL

A bit harsh but... I did spend a significant amount of time working on engineering loadouts for the mamba, and at the end of the day the fdl always felt better. It's a little bit of a bummer because it's so aesthetically pleasing. I could see it being nice as a wing chase ship but for single combat, straight line speed isn't nearly as important.

Edit: that doesn't make it a terrible ship, just kind of moot

I have a fully A rated and G5 engineered Mamba and I love it.

That having been said, I have to agree that the fact that it’s less manoeuvrable than anything except large ships or traders is an absolute joke.

It’s supposedly based on a racing ship, so it should be fast and agile, not turn like a supertanker. Straight line speed is pointless. If you don’t kill your enemy on the first pass, you have to run or it’ll be right up your trumpet before you can blink.

IMO, it needs to be faster and more manoeuvrable at the cost of shields and/or hull. I know they buffed the turn rate when less than max pips to engines, but not by nearly enough.

My guess is that the Mamba is/was not intended to out do the FdL. The Mamba was just supposed to be the Mamba. Bad premises make for bad reviews, and/or comparisons.

If one has a need to reduce everything to a crass, angry, display of creative swearing. The Yamiks has you covered. Other than that useful information, and credible commentaries are few and far between in The Yamiks videos. But, it does happen. so I continue to peek.

I got me one, looked at its specs, Internals and Visuals.

Then I decided it simply only looks good. And noone seems to like it (due to performance).

Then... I decided to pick up a challenge : pick a Ship with no visible purpose and very limited Internals - and transform it into an Exploration vessel :D

For added challenge, take it into Livery and install a COVAS in a foreign language.
Take Maksim COVAS for example (it's free) - and combined with the Mamba's unique Visuals you'll find yourself flying some Russian prototype spaceship called "FireFox" noone remembers how or where you got it from, including you.
But you got it and now you're flying it xD

Seriously, try it - it's surprisingly fun :)

PS.
Engineering is still in progress, but it already sits at 31LY Jumprange.

I absolutely agree with this, they should have made it more different, honestly trading off speed and agility for an internal + 1 or 2 utility mounts seems pretty fair. It's just too similar and the differencea between the mamba and fdl just favor the fdl in most solo play.

I don't particularly like the Mamba, or the FdL for that matter, but I'd be willing to bet even a stock Mamba would allow a Commander to be effective out there. Add some engineering to the ship, and I'm sure the average (like myself) Commander could dominate any PvE task. This is applicable to just about any ship, especially Med sized and above. I see ship choice less about choosing the best, and more about choosing just what you want to fly.

Gotta say, I don't mind the Mamba's handling.
Sure, it's not terribly agile but at least it usually goes where you point it.... possibly because the turn-rate is slow enough that the thrusters have already eliminated any "drift" by the time you're pointed in the desired direction.

I really don't like the way the FdL handles though.
For me, it feels like I'm flying a miniature Cutter. I seem to spend all my time applying directional thrust to get it to fly in the direction I'm pointing the nose.
Because of that, I find the Mamba easier to fly.

Overall, though, Yamiks' video is spot on.
If you're doing PvE stuff, any ship that's "okay" is going to be good enough so you can choose to fly whatever ship you like the look of.
For PvP, though, the Mamba doesn't offer any benefit which can offset the advantage the FdL has so you'd have to be nuts to fly one instead of an FdL.

The Mamba isn't like the FDL, it's really more like the Clipper and suffers the same problem as that ship.

It's good for boom-and-zoom and not much else as far as combat goes, but unlike the Clipper the Mamba is only good for combat.

Not a useless ship, but close to it.

I like the mamba with a mixture of fixed, gimbal and turret weapons. I've won some duels in it vs not terrible pilots.
