One pointer, when your canopy is blown, you can still see the distance to target in super cruise using the front left HUD - shows distance and speed... No need to spiral in towards your target! You might have made it but for that...

That's a good tip! I'm using a Rift so I've been standing up in the cockpit to peer above the broken glass!

I've had my first CMDR kill a few days ago. Certainly had my fun (no that's not the kill - wasn't sure if I got it and killed a couple to confirm that I should have received a war bond if I had landed the final blow).

However, the odd thing is that in the Viper, the orbital lines were still showing for me with a shattered canopy ~3 days ago:
