First, thank you for the video. I watched it twice, taking notes. I think it's a good introduction to what seems to be most of the possible activities within Elite: Dangerous. I am new to the game and am still trying to beat the "Supply Strike" training mission. I watched a couple videos on that subject and I am about to try it again.
I'm looking forward to actually entering the Galaxy "for real" later today and was looking for a video similar to this one. I understand that, for the sake of brevity, this video can not provide "how to" type details. Briefly, the subjects covered in the video are Combat - how/where to get your feet wet, Investigating Signal Sources - possible consequences & rewards, Running Missions - I'm still a little fuzzy on exactly how to find/accept/receive a Mission (Bulletin Boards only?) but I'm sure it will become clear once I actually get in-game, Exploration - one of my main interests and requires the use of a discovery scanner of various available powers and abilities, Mining - where to find rocks and what you'll need to accomplish the task, and Trading - along with Mining this is another interest for me. I think that's pretty much everything in the video and that covers most of what you can do in the game from a purely mechanical standpoint (game mechanics/systems). At least, everything of which I am currently aware.
One of the best things about this game is that it's up to you what you want to do and how you want to do it. Personally, I got my fill of getting blown out of space for no reason in EvE plus my internet connection is quite slow so I'll be avoiding the MMO aspect of the game and focusing on Single Player. I have read there is a "private" option, controlling exactly who "sees" each other and are allowed to interact with each other in this game but I don't really understand how that works yet. I'd be interested in Multiplayer if piracy were not allowed. I know, I know, I'm a weakling or whatever you want to think but let's see how YOU fare if you have up to 6 seconds of delay between the time you enter commands and the time the server gets back to you. Six seconds is an eternity in multiplayer and a death sentence. I don't have an ISP option right now either or I would certainly change providers. I have my reasons for wanting to avoid PvP and I'm not entertaining contradiction. By the time I know I'm under attack I'm dead. That's not fun for anyone, is it? I didn't think so.
One thing I guess I'm a little unclear about is what kind of game is Elite: Dangerous? I mean, OK, it's a Space Sim in some ways, in other ways it's an MMOG, and, really it's an RPG too. By it's very premise it's a role-playing game. Think about it. True, there are no "levels" or "skills" (as far as I know) but you're strapping your-game-self into a space ship and venturing forth into the unknown (at least, unknown to you) as a "Commander" ... of what exactly isn't clear to me yet. Are you really playing the game as your-real-self at that point? I would argue that you are not. You are assuming a fictional role. Especially if you play as a pirate. Now, I'm not saying anything against playing as a pirate. I'd like to do that, myself. It is simply impossible for me to be successful at piracy right now, either offensively or defensively. I will say, though, that griefers ruin games. Besides, I find it annoying to constantly have to watch my back... although I suppose you really should do that anyway. I can't wait to get in-game!
Thanks for a broad-stroke sampling of the possibilities offered by Elite: Dangerous. Now to get to it!
