[VIDEO] Obsidian Ant: The Importance of Atmospheric Worlds

Okay, I've skimmed through the Vid and this is basically what it's about :

  • OA talking a bit as usual
  • Video shows how several other Games are way ahead of ELITE in Graphics and Planetary Rendering Tech. Very far ahead.
  • Star Citizen, MicroSoft Flight Simulator and others (in-game footage cut together)
  • some ELITE Planetary footage shown along, looking extraordinarily bland and ultra basic in direct comparison to the others

Not much to the Video though, one could simply watch a few Trailers of these other titles. Not directly calling it clickbait but the guy is clearly looking for unique views to fill his channel.
(still nice to see what's possible outside of the Cobra Engine and with current tech - but obviously that isn't related to ELITE really)

On topic on Atmo Landings.... sure, it'd be really cool to have.
But would the current Engine be suitable to yield the high-end quality (also keeping Console limitations in mind)?
I highly doubt it, it's currently already hitting its limits rendering a Crystalline Shard Bio site or a Planetary Starport on top of its ProcGen Shader Terrain.

That's not the point of the video.
The point is to focus the attention on this particular content and discussing why it would be important to have it or not in the game.

We all want it, nobody really knows why other than because it would be cool, FDev just need to get on with it & tell us about it. At that level I agree with OA.

I think Atmospheric Planets are very subjective. Probably many people want them for complete different reasons. I know many wants them for a deeper sense of scale and immersion, so they would be happy with a simple cosmetic development. Others can see a big opportunity to introduce new gameloops.
I agree with OA when he says, instead, that from a developer point of view, the lack of atmospheric planet would kick ED back compared to many other games, and this would be a shame because we all know that it is one of the best space game from a lot of other points of view.

At the current rate of development, we’ll probably see atmospherics by 2025, and they’ll be unplayably buggy for at least a year.

A lot of people assume that the landfall planets/moons we have now in ED are somehow an impressive technical achievement on FDev’s part, but they’re just RNG spherical heightmaps with AOE movement and heat generation debuffs applied, plus some more RNG surface sprinklings. That’s all. The difference between that and a decent RNG atmospheric world is massive, especially for Earth-likes.

I’m not sure FDev is really up to the task. Hopefully the “New Era” will showcase a new level of skill on their part.

Not watched the vid but I can't imagine it containing any new insight (regarding ED).

Yeah. Well, it would seem that, for ObsidianAnt in particular, atmospheric worlds now should be a quintaessential part of space sims and any space sim without them would be allegedly left behind.

Someone should tell Everspace, House of Dying Sun, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, X4, or even EVE if you push it, nevermind Elite, that they are in the wrong business without atmosphere access.

I think it's true (I'm not a software developer so I can't really judge), but I think that many people keep observing the game from "behind the scene" rather than from an active player point of view. If it's true that these airless planets are an impressive technical achievement, it's also true that from a gameplay point of view they are just the foundation for an exploration space game. The house also needs walls, windows and a roof.

So is this thread to talk about Atmos Landings (and if so, what about them)? Or is it a thread to talk about OA posting a video on Atmos Landings?

Or is it a thread to talk about what we think of people posting links to videos with no real context, and no summary of what the video talks about, why it’s worth us watching and what they’d like to discuss about it?

Yeah, looks like Space Legs for this time next year, I'd be amazed if we got Atmospheric Worlds at the same time. If anything I wanted Atmospheric Worlds first but I guess more Arx can be sold from Space Legs.
If we get Legs and Atmospheric Worlds I will definitely change my opinion about FDEV. That would be a big surprise.

Oh I agree, the planets we have need so much more on them. I’d love to have a reason to land other than to gather mats or do some settlement-related mission. I’d hoped the Thargoid and Guardian surface sites would be the first of many improvements, but it seems that line of development petered out.

Don’t get me wrong, planets are one of my favorite things about ED, and I’d rather have atmospherics than anything else (including bug fixes), but I just haven’t seen the level of skill or technology needed to craft them demonstrated in ED yet.

It's a thread about atmospheric planets, if you're interested join in and tell us all that you think about it... why they would be important for the game or why not.
There are people that are not interested in atmospheric planets so it would be interesting to know why they think so and what other part of the game they would like to see improved instead.
