Video of 'Shimmering' Aliasing with HTC Vive

When I play ED on my Vive objects with straight lines get an aliasing artifact that changes rapidly over time, leading to a shimmering effect. This happen even when the image should be fixed, i.e., when your ship isn't moving and your head is perfectly still.

I've created a video to show the in game shimmering with the Vive, see the link at the end of this post. This video if from the ED window on my monitor, not the Vive itself (although the Vive is running, and sitting on a table). I will note that the shimmering is more noticeable when wearing the Vive.

My subjective experience is that the 'shimmering' makes objects with straight lines look pretty awful with the Vive. I don't think the aliasing would be nearly as degrading to the experience if it didn't change over time, independent of the view changing, causing shimmering. I should also point out that objects without straight edges look good, and don't suffer from this problem. I flew through aplanetary ring with the Vive and it was spectacular.

I don't have an Oculus, so I have no idea if this happens with it too. I'd be interested to hear if any Oculus user are experiencing the same thing.

I don't want to speculate on why this is happening. I just wanted to post this video so that the Frontier developers can see what I'm talking about, so hopefully either they or Value can do something really clever to hep the situation.

For my money the reason you see 'shimmering' is because the image is SO sharp, u can see individual pixels which are not antialiased.
If fd implemented heavy antialiasing to the image you will lose depth resolution at distance.. so one or the other?

And why is the image SO sharp that u can see individual pixels which are not antialiased in the first place?

hmm when't and had another look, yeah there is something weird going on with edges and text.. :-/

That is a decent video quality. I suspect if you are moving around, flying, etc. that effect will be less noticable. Here's a quote from Sticks on Reddit:

We're happy to investigate these reports of low resolution or other graphical issues, but to do so we need some data to work with. We invite anybody affected by this issue to contact us via Support ticket with the following:

  • A full DXDiag report,
  • A rundown of your VR settings,
  • Some screenshots of your Vive images, if possible.
We can then compare different user experiences and see if we can identify a common link between them.

I just sent off my invoices to customs. Hopefully, if I'm lucky, I'll have my own Vive to test by the weekend.

can you link that reddit post please shadragon, I missed it and can't find it on either /r/vive or /r/elitedangerous

Looks like the video is taken before the distortion filter (i.e. the same feed sent to the mirror window that you can see on the monitor.

That's fine - it still shows the shimmering quite well - is it possibly some interference in the base stations/lighthouses? Positioning? Are the lighthouses connected with the cable? Or running wirelessly? Recalibrate the Vive?
Its like the wiggle you get in your joystick if its not calibrated properly - could be a similar issue if the HMD isn't calibrated perfectly and its wiggling around the 'zero value'.

Incidentally, is this video showing the reduced resolution many are reporting with the Vive?
The text at bottom right looks fine to me, much better than some other screengrabs I've been seeing lately!

I've had a similar sort of shudder in station since Alpha. Was very noticable with tripleheaded monitors, and I still get it with VR but it's better. I don't notice any more tbh.

It varies a lot depending on the ship. I've found eagle and viper to be good, for example. Cutter is the worst - I think the displays are just further away in 3D space.
