Video of using VideoAttack (voice commands)

All,

If you are interested, I've just recorded single player scenario 1 with VoiceAttack configured. I provide commentary whilst playing. It's a cool technology and I'm loving the idea of a 'star trek' style interface. I will record a multi-player session soon; but need to reboot machine first.

http://youtu.be/fZAG5OUCZH8 <= It just processed, so might take a little while to be truly visible.

I like VoiceAttack, although it's not as quick as I'd like; but I blame my old PC and the fact it is running a website in VMWare!! So it's way over utilised.

Kind regards

Cmdr Speedy

Thanks for the video. It seems as if it works really bad though.
If it would actually work without much delay and glitches it would be awesome.

I think this is a case of my machine (a Q6600) with 8GB and GTX285 running with a VMWare image that has 10-15 concurrent users right now. Will shut the server down later and try again... I do expect it to get better.

I have posted a video in the other VoiceAttack thread and you'll see the accuracy is 100%. Not sure if it is OPs microphone, PC or something else, however this is not a representative example of how useful VoiceAttack is.

I am finding it very useful.

Could you link to the video, I don't see another thread.

Nice video but yes on your computer is a bit remedial at the moment.

Reminds me of dog training classes.

Hey Speedy, you weren't very nice to me earlier ;) I was roaming around, testing Voice Attack, and you kept attacking me ;)

Using VoiceAttack

Hi, guys. My name is Gary. I was told to stop by and see the discussions going on about VoiceAttack and Elite. I'm very excited about Elite and even more excited that VoiceAttack is being used with it. VoiceAttack is my hobby project that's been going on since about 2010 (I use it every day), and when Elite ships out, I will be lined up to get it.

Some things you might need to know about VoiceAttack before it becomes truly useful:

1) Your Windows speech engine (default speech engine) must be trained. The difference is like night and day (seriously). This not only improves accuracy, but decreases the amount of delay you may experience. Although it's not twitch-fast, I can use VoiceAttack in World of Warcraft PVP reliably with a trained speech engine.

2) If your mic is on all of the time (if you are not using push-to-listen) VoiceAttack is, 'listening' to everything. The way the speech engine interprets the end of a statement is by silence. In the video, you'll notice that there is a lot of introductory speaking before each command. VoiceAttack is listening to the whole spoken statement, not just the last words of the statement (by design, to make the recognition more accurate in relation to the commands you have indicated). In normal gameplay, you will either be using, 'push-to-listen' if you are having conversations with others, or you will probably not be talking at all (with listening on all of the time) and just issuing simple commands. 'Aft shields', 'full thrust', 'full reverse', 'next target', etc.

3) There are adjustments that can be made in the VoiceAttack options page that will allow you to tweak the recognition settings to fit your speaking style (as in how much delay there is after a recognized or unrecognized command, as well as a command weighting feature that helps VoiceAttack make a best guess as to what you are saying).

4) Make sure your mic is turned up, but not excessively. Also, if you have voice-changing software on for fun, that interferes, too (yes, this does come up on occasion) :)

I hope this helps some. VoiceAttack is not perfect, however with a little tweaking you can make it pretty spot-on. Thanks for reading my ramble :)

Top stuff! Thanks.

I've created another video if interested:

This time it is a little more advanced as I have my 'evade' command in action being used during battle. Other commands used are: 'half ahead', 'deploy', 'weapons', 'systems', 'target', 'hostile', 'next hostile'. This should be enough to give you an idea of how useful it can be and the level of accuracy.. only one command had to be repeated and usually it is none.

Currently 'evade' this just completes for separate evade maneuvers 'evade 1,2,3,4' in a preset order. Each evade sub-command moves me in two directions e.g. 'up and left', or 'down and left', or 'up and right', or 'down and right' for 3 seconds in addition to any movement I am manually putting in via the joystick etc.

I am still working out how best to program evade to maximize the chance of evading. For the final version I would remove the voice playback of 'evade 1,2,3,4' however it is in the video just for demonstration purposes.

Sorry dude... Got bored of floating around and thought I'd attack some people. What I love about this... Nothing personal, you are all 'victims'..

Discovered that my PC had also kicked off a window's backup and that the VMWare image had leaked a lot of memory; hence a reboot of the machine has been required. I'm sure this is the reason for the poor performance. I will give it another go tomorrow night. However, here's a snippet of the online game I tried:

Interesting, thanks. As a viewer it was hard to tell what was "you" at the joystick and what was the computer, so it seems to be quite fluid.

Lol awesome, but really you need to call it "Evasive manouvers!" :p

Thanks for the info, really looks a lot better than the other two video's I've seen (one about a jet flight simulator where a lot of commands where glitchy also).

How much cpu power does Voice Attack / MS Speech Engine consume? I have plenty of cores so it shouldn't be a problem but I'm curious.
