General / Off-Topic Video Recording Help

I have an idea for a video series in Elite: Dangerous that I really want to do, but I'm having issues with recording serviceable gameplay. Even when I scale down the resolution, the recording still goes choppy when action starts in the game. I'm using OBS, and I've looked up settings to try and get around the problem, but to no avail.
I suspect the problem unfortunately is just my hardware--it's a laptop. It's powerful enough to run the game fine, but it seems it can't handle playing and recording at the same time. Can anyone tech-savvy enough look at what my laptop is equipped with, and tell me am I just screwed or is there something I can do?

ASUS Model X550ZA
Processor: AMD A10-7400P Radeon R6, 10 Computer Cores 4C+6G 2.50 GHz
8.00 GB of RAM

Yeah...pretty sure the problem is the equipment..but it might be a configuration issue with OBS. I run an I7 3660, 8 gigs RAM, and an NVidia 560 and had no problems with OBS and Elite.

Have you seen this:

I was afraid of that.
And I don't think that helps me. My laptop isn't using nvidia, and my issue isn't a black screen, it's the recording being choppy or freezing up.
