Video series created for complete beginners

Hi,

I've been reading a fair amount of feedback and comment from people who have found the Alpha to be a little overwhelming at first. This need not be the case. I've started a series aimed at the absolute basics. It's paced very slowly. Any important references to items on the screen will be highlighted and zoomed, with a detailed explanation (and references if there are any).

Back To Basics Alpha Series on YouTube

It's not for everyone, but so far, I've had good feedback on the first episode.

It takes hours to upload on my crappy ADSL, but I'll try to get another one done this time tomorrow.

If you have any comments or questions that you'd like looked at, I can try to work them in to the next episode.

Thanks for reading and watching.

Kroy.

Nice video. I realise I'm not the target audience but I did learn something from it. I hadn't noticed the thing with the gun reticule filling in before. I'm sure that a lot of people will find the dead zone tip useful, it's great for people trying to get to grips with the controls.

Great video for explaining to all of us who dont have the alpha how to play the game for when we actually get our greasy hands on it.

This is a good idea, and it is needed, but it's too soon.
Upload videos streaming Alpha, ok ... but PLEASE wait for the full game, when there's no more tweaks, fixes, re-balancing, changes, server resets etc etc ... THEN make the Let's Plays, and the How To's, and the player's guides, and the walkthroughs and everything else.

Why? You make a guide now. Something gets changed. You make another guide. Something else gets changed. You make yet another guide. And on and on and on it goes. And it's not one person doing that, it's lots of people doing it. What we end up with is lots of conflicting and incorrect information that is then confusing for any new players now or in the future. You might delete the incorrect videos / guides etc ... but not everyone will.

I'm sorry if I sound harsh, I want how to's and let's plays and walthroughs and guides, really I do ... but when the time is right, and in my opinion, that's not yet.

I disagree. There are a number of alpha players who are struggling with the flight controls as they currently are, so a little bit of help now will enable them to make the most of their £200 contribution. It'll also help them to be a productive part of the test programme -- if they get frustrated with the flight controls now, they're likely to give up on the whole thing. The more people able to give feedback (especially those who aren't experienced flight/space simmers) the better.

I do get the point about misleading information, but I think Kroy has been pretty clear that this series is only for the Alpha and intended to help out a few people who are struggling.

Your videos are really interesting. Thanks for sharing. I am all for flying without assist and it shows how much tweaking is possible to get the right behavior :)

If your gonna lash 200 quid at the game for Alpha you would at least think these people would have a rudimentary understanding of the flight control.
I will get access for Beta and am quite confident how this is going to feel and fly.

Well thanks for the feedback all round good and bad. The fact that some people have found it helpful provides me with sufficient motivation to continue.

Clearly not. None of us knew exactly how this would fly prior to the release of the Alpha. I don't have any experience of the original game, but I played FE2 plenty as a teenager, so that's my benchmark for this game, and my reason for backing it. The Alpha flight controls certainly don't play like the FE2 ones did.

I'm lucky in that I'm pretty good on spatial awareness, so I can pick up control schemes like this quite quickly. I realise that it'll take me longer than others to master, though not as long as some. There are nuances that it'll take me a long time to master, especially with flight assist off (which is my ultimate goal).

Please keep going. I only offered an opinion, it doesn't mean people have to obey it. If people want to make guides, walkthroughs let's play's etc, then please don't let what I say stop you.

And Kroy, what was said in reply to me is correct, if it helps people get the most from their £200 (or local currency equivalent) and be better, more productive alpha testers, then that is a good thing.

I'd rep you, but it seems I must spread some love a bit more first. :)

I have to politely disagree - the exercise of making the video has two clear advantages. Firstly it keeps those of us without alpha access engaged with the product and provides an insight into the way the game is put together, potentially allowing discussion and feedback from a wider audience. Secondly, it shows the designers exactly how the Alphas are interacting with the game, potentially highlighting areas they hadn't considered/noticed and allowing them to refine the game in a positive manner for the rest of us.

Thoroughly good video guide and should time and enthusiasm permit, feel free to keep going.
