[VIDEO] Some changes in Alpha 2.2 :)

Hi guys,
I made a video of my first scenario in Alpha 2.2. This features at some point

--- blimey, we have a body!
---different target reticule for gimballed pulse laser
--- looks like fancier graphics
--- more intelligent AI (that's my excuse)
--- gimballed pulse laser seems nerfed in its tracking capabilities and power
--- AI ramming :p!
--- EXPLOSIONS!

Not featured
--- pc talent :p

EDIT: Another video :), this time in the Endless War scenario using gimballed pulse laser + cannon duo. I got pretty confused between reticules at times, but practice will help! Everyone (including me) is taking longer to die, probably after feedback from 2.1

H

Plz can u tell if ur using Track IR to look around in the cockpit ?

just a curiosity about a detail, since i wasn't able to understand it from your video:

the body arms and hands are moving according to the movements you do or are they stand still on their position ?

they don't animate, the joysticks don't move, the display readouts on the seat don't change.....but you can bet they will later.

ok, ..well.. it's just nice to have a body instead of an empty sit.
the time will fill the rest i think.

Nice vid, cheers. As you mentioned you use the 360 controller, do you think it's all you need, or will you be swapping to the dual flight controller (throttle control + Joystick) set up?

Gamepad is less precise and only 2+2dof. And e.g. the cheap Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X has no hat switch on the throttle for lateral movement. Strafe is probably better for left hand. Ideal would be 3 dof on joystick for yaw/pitch/roll plus a throttle with a digital pov for strafing but that is 150€ upward. I'd prefer a single joystick like the cheap Thrustmaster T.16000M and use keyboard for strafe / speed. But I'll first try mouse before buying a joystick :)

pretty sure the T-flight has a rocker on the throttle which you can use for lateral. meaning you have yaw/pitch/roll on the stick, a throttle and lateral on left hand. it also has a pov hat on the stick for power distribution

Thanks for that, I think I finally get why the controller thread is all about the HOTAS now. And thanks to this answer I'm finally getting a good idea how I'll need set up my 360 controller (LJoy Yaw, dpad speed/strafe, RJoy Pitch/Roll, lots left for targeting shooting etc...). Should be fun getting it just right.

I broke sooo many joysticks I never really want to start down that road again. What a gamepad lacks in flight control realism it makes up for in spades with brute force bullet proof reliability. If it sucks then Ill pop for the other options. My own personal alpha test you may say.

There are a couple of things that hamper my using a joystic:

- I am left handed, so can't use a HOTAS set up; Thrustmaster 16000M might be OK

- At the moment, I am playing on my 40" TV throught my home cinema... epic, but nowhere to rest the stick :).

However, I can definitely feel the limitations of the gamepad, and may well get a stick. I think that unless you want to mostly battle other players, gamepad will be fine. Also, DB said in the EDGE interview (I think) that people will be matched with others at a similar skill level; this will account for peripherals so that the playing field could be quite level.

When you say you are feeling the limitations, can you describe that in more detail?

Are there specific mechanical limitations that you can pin down?

To be honest, it's very good really; the only real complaint is with the sensitivity of the movement gained from the thumbsticks. It didn't help that Alpha 2.2 somehow removed my mapping for latteral thrusters :p. I would imagine that joystick would be more precise (that's the impression I got from other people on these forums anyway).

Practice makes perfect, and gimballed weapons help gamepads a fair amount too :p. I am trying to use non-gimballed stuff in order to improve my aim.

The are are plenty of buttons for combat stuff (16 in all), and you can totally reconfigure it yourself (for example, I don't use firegroups, so I set gamepad A to select nearest hostile).

I think I remember Kerrash saying that joystick was best, but gamepad was almost as good. I might just stick to the pad :p.
