Newcomer / Intro Viewing your ship in the Livery

Am I the only cmdr that finds the Livery really hard to use when selecting paint jobs or knowing where the nameplates and decals are getting placed? Usually I have to take my ship up to the surface and use the exterior camera to see where the decals and stuff got placed and how they look.

Some ships not so bad. I haven't been back to the bubble, but trying to use the Livery on FCs isn't nice. Dark, dingy, can't hardly see what the paint job might look like.

I know I can get a slightly better overview at paint jobs in the Frontier store, but I find the colours and appearance look different when actually applied.

Question:
Am I missing something? Are there controls for moving the camera around in the Livery that I just don't realize? Is there some better method for visualizing your ship in the Livery? I feel so dumb. I gotta be missing something.

That is a lot darker than I recall seeing when I am in livery, but that might be either my memory or that I haven’t used the livery on a carrier.

You can map controls to rotate the ship and zoom in but they only work in the store IIRC.

It is odd. Sometimes it seems to depend on where you are currently docked - if the place is in darkness, so is the livery section. You can't nove the camera in livery either. However, as aRJay says, if you go to the store, things are much brighter and you can use - at least in my case - the mouse to rotate your ship whislt holding down a button (mouse 3 for me).

When you are in the game you can only set a key to toggle preview - which only removes the menu. You can‘t pan the camera.

BUT from the main menu, as you say, you can choose the game shop - and in here you can set a key to pan around and zoom in and out. And you don’t have to own a ship to buy something for it.

Press here to select any ship in the game without having to own it:

I don’t agree that ships look different from the shop in the game. It’s only because of the different lightings, and that is to be expected.

That is just dark because you are in a FC.

You should see nameplates and decals clearly - their position doesn't change so once you have seen where they go you should always be able to relate to that in outfitting.

As others have pointed out, there is no camera movement in livery, only in repaint preview in the "store" from the main menu.

I'd like to be able to move the camera not so much in livery but in outfitting, choosing which tiny hardpoint to fit a PDT to on an imp ship is a pain. ;)

Thanks, yes I see you can bind viewing keys for the ingame store allowing cmdr to rotate & zoom ship. This allows for better lighting, see the special shiny effects of some paint jobs, and see the sides & back of ship.

Why the ingame store requires a separate set of keybinding seems strange to me.... just another thing to bind.

Of course the ingame store doesn't display your ship, so you don't see your decals and name plates with various paint jobs (minor point).

It is annoying we don't simply get the free camera in Outfitting and Livery.

It is weird that you get a different in-game graphical presentation when switching between Hanger, Outfitting, and Livery. Isn't it all taking place in the Hanger?

Oh well. Thanks for the responses, appreciated. I would never have thought to use in-game store with additional keybinding.

No camera bindings in Livery or Outfitting as they are fixed...except for one
that I found. There are Store Camera bindings including a toggle to see the ship
without the store graphics. This also works in-game with some of the livery
selections. It does not work in Outfitting.

Some basic get started info...

The Camera Suite allows eight programmed views of the Ship or SRV. Docked
the player needs to be at the arrival screen to activate. In space the player
is still controlling the Ship or SRV but with the current Camera Suite view.

The Free Camera is activated in the Camera Suite. The player is no longer
controlling the ship but the camera that can move in any direction and zoom.
There are many detailed bindings that can create very professional camera
movements when creating videos. I use it a lot looking at ship decals and
ship kits while still docked in the garage.

These bindings will toggle the Camera Suite on/off for the Ship and SRV.

Camera Suite / Ship - Toggle Camera Suite
Camera Suite / SRV - Toggle Camera Suite

These bindings will scroll through eight views of the ship or SRV.

Camera Suite / Previous Camera
Camera Suite / Next Camera

This binding exits the Camera Suite and enters the Free Camera settings.

Camera Suite / Enter Free Camera

This binding exits the Free Camera but I don't bind it instead toggle out
of the cameras.

Free Camera / Exit Free Camera

Finally my basic camera controls match my HOTAS flight bindings. I'm not
an ED Video pro as that could be a full time job! :)

Regards

At the time of the OP I was referring to the web based Frontier store https://dlc.elitedangerous.com/ships/list?extra_type=180&page=2 where you only see a top-down picture. Those pictures are pretty basic. It hadn't yet occurred to me to look in the "in-game store" which shows the ship, paint job, and special shiny effects. Thanks though, your comment directed me to the in-game store..

It is also weird that to access the "in-game" store you must exit the game to the main menu.

It’s done like that so you’ll be able to put a new paint or a ship-kit on your ship even when you are far out in the black. It’s a great addition IMO, and it hasn’t always been possible. That’s the reason why it isn’t weird either that you have to bind a key for some functions. If they just dictated a number of keys they would risk overwriting some of our bindings.

I’ve never used the web based shop.
