Vindication, a journey to future ship focused roles?

Now that we have further precedent for role-specific modules (first military slots, now cargo/hauling-specific modules, and a dash of Luxury Cabins (but that isn't slot-specific, more limited to a specific line of ships... I digress)), what do we think the next one will be?

Is it time to confuse explorers by giving them an extra slot to put something in, adding weight but also utility... and if so, what? Fuel Scoops and Guardian FSDs are the obvious choice, but what about potential new sensors, or a size 3 SRV bay that holds 2, or that Fuel Scoop/Tank combo I have mentioned elsewhere?

While the PC can do some mining, is it mining specific  enough? Can we get a ship with Miner-only slots that fit Refineries and Limpets?

What other roles am I forgetting about, and what can we stick in them?

Yep, it has started.
The PC has a 'special' so every other role has to have one too.

Perhaps the next 2 ships will be role-specific and also have a 'special' slot, exclusive to their role.
If they do, it won't be what folk imagined, probably.

With luck, between now & July the PCII will have a last minute redesign and throw out the new 'space magic' for something more rational!

I rather like the ship variety we have now for exploration, axing that by having new functionality (sensors or such) be exclusive to only two-three ships would be a huge step back.

Equipment that's just more of the same but with bigger numbers isn't as bad though. The numbers are pretty big already as they are anyway.

the restricted modules were always dumb.
they should just do an actual rebalance of litterally everything instead of just aplying band aids.
in terms of balance i cannot even begin to imagine a game more stagnant than elite.
how difficult would it be to just give the ships a quirk to set them apart instead of just gimping modules ? i mean a limpet litterally does everything, why do i need hundreds of tons of bluetooth controller to upload a command ?
maybe add some more optional modules with real gameplay instead.

I've been saying this since before the PC was announced, so it was a non-factor.

Addressing these together, this is why I'm not saying 'give new ultra ship', I'm saying do like they did with the Type-9 when the Cutter came out - retroactively add [specialized] slot to things. Add the Explorer slot to... explorers, give other ships limpet-y things. This is not to counter power creep, but instead an attempt to equalize it.

Now, if you want for Zorgon Peterson ships to use Zorgon Peterson brand limpets better because they design them to work together and everyone else has to deal with kitbashing things to make them work... fine. We can micromanage the modules so things have quirks like that.

The problem is that without restricting slots you can just fill every slot with HRPs and turn a "trade" ship into an insanely tanked combat ship.

But if fdev wanted to release improved military-slot-only reinforcements to give the non-fdl combat ships a buff...
Yes! Paying attention to the assignment by brainstorming new things! More of this, people.

Hilariously, on the FD discord, there was a request for a 'special' module for miners last evening - seeingas the PCII had something 'special' for haulers, the logic was that other activities should be so fortunate also.
I should, at some point, join the FDev discord and give them a giant thumbs up.

I mean
extra cargo space is something special for miners too
if they can get a frankly obscene amount of cargo in the special slots while still having room to fit a boatload of collectors in the smaller slots, that's pretty dank for a miner.

Extra cargo would make sense, but it was this:

"special module thing is for hauler type vessels to receive some level of efficiency bonus to mining lasers. "

Which isn't extreme, granted.

Honestly I'd love to see some sort of military slot module to give a buff to the hulltanks. Especially something related to the thing that hulltanks always have trouble with and shieldtanks don't - having their modules shot out.
Something like a military-grade AFM that doesn't need to take modules offline and just automatically repairs damaged modules as long as it's active. Or a module reinforcement with better-than-60% protection. Or an internal shield generator that runs off the sys cap and protects against breach damage (essentially acting as a self-regenerating MRP) - you know, those sorts of things. They'd be a huge buff to the fedbricks and the alliance 3 without buffing the current FDL/Py2 meta.

I've always found it odd that the Automatic Field Maintenance Unit wasn't actually automatic...
Same with reinforcements stopping at C5, but I assume that is to do with 'balance'

Been saying the same thing for years but still....

I'd like to see science stuff.

Primarily, it'd consist of a "sensor array" module, which'd come in various sizes (C1, C3, C5 and C7).
The sensor array module would function a bit like a "hangar bay" but for scientific equipment, with the C1 module having 1 slot, C3 having 2, C5 having 3 and C7 having 4.

There'd then be various lumps of scientific equipment that you could fit into the sensor array to do stuff like test the gravity of a planet, scan a planet for biological life, test the radiation of a star, analyse the atmosphere of a planet, scan a ring system etc.

There'd then be missions that required the use of that equipment.
Take 10 gravitational readings at different places on [nearby planet].
Take radiation readings at a bunch of different distances from a star.
Find a planet with specific biological life.
Collect atmospheric data from at least 10 planets including one that has [thing].
Find a ring system that has at least X% deposits of some mineral or other.
Etc.

This, in turn, would be linked to the BGS and Colonisation and help factions expand into different systems.

Those are interesting ideas and I would love to see buffs to (biweave) hulltanks (aside from mandalay and cbm5). At the bare minimum they should have upgraded the integrity of the canopy a long time ago, let us set the position of MRPs to be at the bottom of module list so that manual afmu is a bit faster, and make the experimental 'double braced' a bit more (they must have reviewed stats on our modules' experimentals).

Absolutely. Abandon the days of having to put your DSS in a size 3 slot!
