Viper 2 Concept

During the initial stages of working out RPG concept art and ship art, I drew up a 3D model of the Viper 2 based on the concept art we saw during the Kickstarter.

I wondered if it would be printable, so sent it off to Shapeways to see if it would work. It came up as a printable model, so I printed it. I received it in the post yesterday and thought I would share it here. This is NOT something for the RPG, merely me mucking about for my own amusement (obviously they're not 100% accurate). I won't be making any more of them. But they look cool, so wanted to share.

They're about an inch long. I was amazed at the amount of detail that the 3D printers could get onto a model that size - the little recesses in the back bulkhead came out really nice!

They do look cool, and with the right paint job could knock it out the park.

If I can find my model paints, I might have a go at painting it. A quick trip to Games Workshop (hack, spit) might be appropriate for paints.

No hull lines or anything have been etched on the model, and it might be a bit tricky to paint those on. A challenge...

And, yes, the quality of 3D printing is going up all the time.

look nice, how brittle are they, I ask as the last 3D model i had was the Mass effect Normandy, lasted 3 days until my little one dropped it on the carpet.
vowed never to buy a 3D model again after that one.

Well, I've thrown Shapewayes models against walls and dropped them on the floor and none have broken yet, but so far all the ones I've made have been rather small and not with many thin or easily broken parts.

Looking at the plastic, though, it does look quite brittle. It feels solid without much in the way of give, so I would guess that it's brittle. A good medium for small, solid models, but probably not great for big spindly things.

They look great, but at only an inch long, they sound like they're going to be quite tricky to paint! I look forward to seeing the results.
