For the last couple of weeks I've been using two D2 beam lasers on the medium slots and two cannons on the small slots. It's effective since with an A3 Power plant and Distributor the beams can fire almost continuously with the only thing forcing a stop is a heat warning after around 40 seconds. But it just didn't seem to kill ships larger than a cobra fast enough. Unless I was right on top of them Adders and Pythons could still power up their Framshifts and jump before I could finish them.
I switched the cannons for small gimballed beam lasers (E1) and found that burning through Python or Adder shields was super easy. Taking hull is pretty quick too but I noticed that subsystem targeting didn't do nearly as much damage to the subsystem as just take out hull.
The capacitor can only fire all four beams for around 4.5 seconds before turning into rotating pulses but taking a shield down to nothing makes it worthwhile. The good quality power distributor means I can still recharge engine/system/weapon power in between weapon passes.
I know using kinetic weapons for hull is more orthodox, but all energy gets a high burst damage and a reasonable sustained damage as well.
My config is the medium beams on button 1 and smalls (top mount on the viper) on button 2.
I have yet to try this on larger ships like clippers or dropships so I'm not sure yet if the difficulty in targeting subsystems will be more of a handicap, but at least for any ships smaller (also took out a lakon-9 and lakon-7 for missions) than them it's quite a responsive fit.
