Viper III or Viper IV?

Hi

I want to buy my first ship this weekend and looking to get 1 of the above. The problem is this, the version IV has more armor + cargo space and the version III more manoeuvrability. Is the version III so much better in combat that it's a no brainer to buy the version IV or will I still put up a very good fight with the version IV?

Another thing that I would like to know is that the station I am at does not sell the Cobra, should I go look at another station?

Many thanks

I prefer manoeuvrability over tank so I used the 3 on the CG. but my wingman prefered the 4. It's a matter of personal taste

Both of these are by CMDR Yamiks, who has a very...distinct...style :)

I've not linked to them directly as the language may be a bit salty here and there. Been a while since I watched them last.

If you want out and out combat, Viper Mk3. If you want more configuration and multipurpose (a bit) MkIV.

Having flown both, i prefer the MKIV.

I was initially wary of its lower agility but its got amazing lateral and vertical thrusters. A visit to an engineer for some Thruster upgrades and its a superb ship for Bounty Hunting, and my main BH ship on my Xbox account

Down to personal taste, both are excellent combat ships (I traded my III for a IV)

III is a little more capable in a dogfight situation and just that little bit quicker to react, the IV isnt that far behind in the agility stakes however the advantage it has is being able to withstand obscene amounts of punishment that would kill off the III.

Id recommend the IV but again its down to personal taste of what you think you would prefer. The edge on dogfighting or the extra protection.

If I'm after a pure fighter then Mk III all the way.
If I'm after a good fighter/multi role then Mk IV. Will use it as an alternative to a Cobra Mk III.

Sounds like will go with the MK IV then as I will need to do other things with it aswell. Best betwee Cobra III and Viper IV?

Thanks for the help so far, I am hungry to know more abouth this game. Youtube and this site has been very educating.

Cobra Mk III : Better speed, better cargo capacity
Viper Mk IV: Better weapon placement, better armour
Otherwise they are quite similar to each other.
Choose which is more important to you.

From someone who has spent his fair share of time in combat zones - Viper IVs are hugely irritating to fight as the combination of speed, agility and toughness means they can take ages to shoot down... in other words, most likely better than the III...

I originally skipped over the Viper III, until I lost my much nicer ship due to a stray shot in bounty hunting. That's when I bought a Viper III, because it lets me bounty hunt when I need to at 1/10th the rebuy of my fancier ships. Well, it's 1/5th now, because it's A-rated and tanked out, but it's still way cheaper to replace if I bite off more than I can chew.

I should mention that my approach is a bit different than yours, as I'm building different ships that specialize in different purposes, vs one ship that can do everything well. Granted, my Keelback carries lots of cargo and can put pirates in the grave, but I've gone with a more defensive outfitting on that ship instead of offense. I've got some mean weapons on my DBX, but most of the modules are D rated for jump range, and I've got no extra hull enforcement. My Viper III is a fighter, period. I did put a 2 ton cargo slot in a spare slot, which I fill with some valuables as bait. Please pirates, interdict me ;) All the other slots are shields and boosters and lots of hull reinforcement (my V3 is more of a tank than many V4s out there) and other BH tools.

ps - someday when I'm rich and rebuy is no longer an issue, I'll try the V4 in a similar configuration. Rebuy cost is my #1 reason for picking V3 over V4 right now.

Interesting - I'm just starting and don't have the funds yet for a viper but I'm curious what your configuration is for the viper as a fighter.

It's really down to preferential play-styles. I've always been the beefcake tank type of player in most games, and so when I jump into Elite I tend to go for the chunkier ships. To that end, the MkIV is my girl.

I've always preferred the Cobra owing to boost speed.

Viper3 is a great ship for learning combat in and making some quick credits when starting a new game...

...unfortunately being a combat ship it just doesn't have the fuel/jump capability to travel comfortably and it can have some power issues when A rated.

The Viper4 is nearly always my first purchase when I restart the game. It has impressive shields and hull, great jump range and carries 40t of cargo shielded. I'm also a fan of its sexy little class 1 module for a docking computer or discovery scanner. Feels so neat and tidy.

I can't stand the hardpoint placement and off centre driving position of the Cobra3. It's also 2x (2x!!!!) wider than the Viper4 making it much easier to hit in combat. Despite the hulking feeling you get when you drive the Viper4 it's actually a little smaller than an Eagle...

Eagle:31.2L - 29.7W - 7.1H
Viper4:29.9L - 24.7W - 8.7H

...but much more powerful! They're nightmares once fully kitted out, used to see how hard I could crash mine into planetary bases without breaking its shields. ;-)

The viper mk3 can use enhanced thruster, making it much faster than the cobra.

...But also equates to a crazy high re-buy, and not mention that it severely limits outfitting choice elsewhere. A Cobra gets decent shields if using a bi-weave, and huge armour potential thanks to all those slots for HRP/MRP, alongside a higher Base armour.
