Viper power issues

this is my current setup on my viper

YdeX6Id.jpg

I am also running 4 gimballed multi cannons and a KWS

as you can see, I'm not even all A class modules and my power use exceeds my available power
currently with hardpoints deployed I lose FSD, cargo scoop, and fuel scoop

is there anything above a "A" class power plant (doubtful)
what can I do to lower my power usage further, currently I lose life support if I outfit my viper with lasers or a cargo scanner

Go to the Modules tab on the right hand panel in your ship. There you can set priorities, priority 1 is most important.

Set things like the Cargo Hatch to lower priority, say 3. That will be the first thing shut down when there isn't enough power. Then you might set your FSD to 2 or 3, because you can't use it while your weapons are deployed anyway. That will be the second thing shut down when there isn't enough power.

By doing that, you can decide which things get turned off, and which stay on.

seems fine. in your power management set cargo hatch, fuel scoop and fsd on priority 3 (I'm pretty sure will do hatch only, but just to be sure)- those are things you won't need in combat

ah Faol writes faster :p

You have a class 3 power plant rated A, which is the best class 3 you can get. Find a hi tech world where you can get a class 2 power plant. Try Tionisla or the Founders world.

Ditch the Viper. It's been nerfed hard.

I don't even.

Not using 4 gimballed weapons will help.

Also, you don't need C level life support, and you most certainly don't need A level sensors. Those systems makes negligible difference in performance while draining power (I mean how often would you get your ship so banged up that you need to use life support's emergency air supply anyways, especially the fact that you got shield banks so your shield prolly never goes down? It is a BIG waste). It will also make your ship much lighter running D level version of those systems.

A level your thrusters instead and B level your shield if you like more maneuverability. The difference between B and A shields are not that much because B shield at 4 PIP is already pretty damn strong, but A drains a fair bit more power (more than having A thrusters if I recall correctly).

why? that would REDUCE his power.
A3 power capacity = 12.0
A2 power capacity = 9.6

edit:
gotta say, that paint job looks great on the viper. yellow copperhead?

as in the OP, I lose the non combat systems already, and have set it up that way,

just, no...

That is a lot of power being used, I have 2 beams in the class 1 slots and still don't use that much power - A shields will add more (don't like B, they are too heavy and I like to nurse at least some jump range out of the ship). All mine are fixed though. Certainly life support I'm not upgrading unless I ever find anything lighter, if I lose my canopy I'll accept losing the ship!

Here's the thing about the Viper. It allows you to have a higher than class weapons systems for its size. You have the fire power of a Cobra in a smaller ship, 180T vs 60T. If the acceleration rate is not superior to that of the Cobra then that is the issue not available Power.

yes, and thanks :)

I wanted to stay with the viper just because it looks so sexy like this

until I can afford a python that is

edit:

Faol, how much power does your A2 cell bank use? also are you running quad beams?

Have 2 class 1 beams, and 2 class 2 multicanons. All four are fixed, the multicannons would go up by 0.2 power draw each if gimballed, apparently gimballed beams use 0.02 less power than fixed. I don't have a KWS fitted. Also I forget how the Discovery Scanner got back on there, thought I'd sold that off for less weight, maybe I felt like exploring one day or something! The real surprise is the energy difference when retracted, as it shouldn't be the KWS or weapons there.

Consumption goes down to 10.13 deployed if I sell the Shield Cell, so that makes it 0.42.

EDIT and the most basic fuel scoop (all that is available where I am) takes my retracted up to 8.39 if I swap that in, in place of the discovery scanner, so a 0.14 difference.

I noticed that KWS have a very high power load. IMHO this should be reduced as they are very important for bounty hunting. You don't need C or above, but D is really very very helpful at 3km range. See which KWS you have and try downgrading it to fit other stuff, but be prepared to be annoyed when ships go out of the short range over and over again.

If I were you, I'd downgrade my life support and sensors, anything above D is overkill imo. If you downgrade, you'd lose some weight and free up some power. Just some food for thought.

Your shield generator is probably the biggest power user. Maybe think about reducing the class or rating.

Also prioritize your power like some othe rfolks have stated.

The grade D only has a range of 2.5 km, it says 3 but that's because it rounds up.

I also put life support to priority 3 when i tried with 4 laser beams on my viper in beta2. Everytime i deploy weapons it's "Darth Vader" mode :p
