Ive spoken to many pilots and the unanimous vote is that a Viper is nothing more than a nerfed snail in the mud compared to the Cobra. I don't like to believe this because the Viper is suppose to be the dedicated fighter ship with superior agility and speed. What I'm asking is if a experienced player piloti3ng a Viper went toe to toe with an experienced player piloting a Cobra who do you believe would come out victorious?

Both ships are good fighters. The difference is in fighting style, light fighter vs heavy fighter. If you both fly a close in, circling fight the viper's superior agility, accelleration and turning should win it, but in a strafing/jousting/zoom 'n' boom style fight the cobra's heavier armour and twice as many hard points will chew up the lighter viper.

Sandmann is right in that Viper will destroy the Cobra in a close distance fight with its better manoeuverability. The Viper is also faster so it can force the close distance fight if it wants to.
It is my opinion Viper is still better even after the nerf, though this comes with the disclaimer I haven't really fought any really skilled opponents in the current version.

The cobra has better speed, agility, shields and shield cells assuming both ships are fully upgraded. The viper has more concentrated armament and is a smaller target. Both have highly restrictive cockpit views, but I consider the viper worse in this regard. Overall, I'd say the Cobra is the better fighter currently even though it isn't supposed to be a fighter.
It's all moot. Given that both ships are fully upgraded and tweaked for pure combat, packing equivalent weapons, and each ship's pilot was a twin of the other in competence; in B2, the Viper had superiority. In B3 however, the Cobra now has the edge. Depending on how FD tweaks them further, who knows what will happen in B3.09, Gamma and release.
It is my hope that ultimately, FD makes the Viper superior for combat. After all, it is supposed to be a dedicated hunter killer. The Cobra has always been multi-role; and should be an (excellent) jack of all trades, master of none.
