Hardware & Technical Virpil - ever available?

I really want that T-50 Throttle and the Delta Stick plus base, all with table mounts and dust covers, and whatnot. But hell! These are always out of stock (for rest world). Do these products even exist?

Bought the Virpil throttle just before Christmas - they're very prompt (and not overly optimistic) with their estimates. (I'm looking at you, VKB!?!)

Virpril just saved themselves from ~800 of my hard earned dollars. I'm baffled by their business strategy, you have maybe a day to buy one of several grips, buy must win the refresh page lottery for a chance at a base?

For those in the know, is it always like this, or have they just seen higher demand lately?

I'd gladly plop down the money on a pre-order and wait months, but I'm not taking time off work to have a chance to give them hundreds of dollars, don't care how nice their stuff is.

Agree 100%.

Sorry to hear that.

I guess I was lucky. I can't remember if I got an email reminder or just revisited the site on the right day, but saw the throttle was in stock (it's only been launched a few months) and ordered straight away. The estimated delivery was short, and accurate.

But yeah, I can see now it's out of stock again. I suppose to some extent it's a matter of preference - would you prefer to have an order/pre-order in and not have any firm idea of when it'll be due? Or is it better if they don't accept any orders until the backlog is low/gone and they have a firm idea of when new orders can be fulfilled?

Thanks for the update. I'm thinking about getting the throttle.

If you have any questions on the Virpil throttle, let me know. (Though to be honest, I've only ever tried one other throttle - the Warthog - so don't have much to compare! :) )

I was also very tempted by the VKB throttle, I love the number and mix of controls, plus the sheer bulk of it. Unfortunately, they seem to be saying it's very unlikely to be available before the end of the year (2019).. which I take to mean mid-2020 at best. Ah well, if/when it becomes available, my existing throttles will have died. Or global warming will have killed us all. Who knows....

Most important question, do you like it? Is it sturdy? Can you use all buttons in Elite or is the 32-button limit reducing the use of it?

My thrustmaster throttle just gave up today. Have to see if reconnecting it will help, but at the moment, just seconds ago, it was not working. Ugh. (Got it working again, phew)

(As I said, I only have the Warthog to compare it to....)

It's very sturdy. Not as heavy as the Warthog throttle (which is ridiculously heavy) but still is very unlikely to move unless you're really swinging your arm about.

The throttle levers are very solid. They're smaller than the Warthog's, and with less travel. By default it ships with a centre detent too, so if you use it for a full-range throttle (-100% to +100%) it's fairly sensitive, a small slide of the throttle takes you from 100% to 50% etc. It might be better off taking out the detent and just using it as a forward-only throttle (0-100%). Personally, I've gotten quite used to it as it is.

The control set is (IMO) much better suited to ED than the Warthog, 4 push buttons, 4 hat switches and a wheel in the lever. Plus 8 buttons, one slide axis, two dials and two flip switches in the base. There are more controls in the base, but they're unusable by default in ED because of the 32 button limit (which most controllers don't meet, since they don't have that many controls). You can't use 4 of the 6 flip switches in the base, plus the 3 encodes (bottom right) and the yellow push button. I haven't needed them yet, but it is possible to use 3rd party utilities to map these controls to keyboard button presses, and then map those button presses in ED.

The only (extremely picky) criticisms I have are: some of the buttons/switches in the base feel a little flimsy. It's not a usability/reliability thing, just more a "feeling of quality". On the Warthog, the buttons and switches feel rock-sold. Also from a very picky, ergonomic point of view, I prefer that the Warthog lever is near-vertical when at 0%, and you push it forward to get to 100%; whereas the Virpil throttle is tilted back at ~20 degrees when at 0%, which is just slightly more awkward.

That said, I've had lots more problems with the "best device around" Warthog. One of the buttons started giving me problems early on, sporadically non-firing or firing constantly; so I had to disable it. Even taking it to a repair shop didn't fix it. Also, after about 18 months, the Warthog logic board died and had to be replaced - at full cost.
