Hardware & Technical Virpil introduces new Mongoos T-50 Throttle

With dual stick setup - I'd just be setting up 0, 25, 50 and 100, boost, and thrust +/-.Not worth the effort to the your hand off one of the sticks to adjust the throttle, ED really likes you to sit at the 75% blue one anyway.

Updates on the throttle's development: (TL;DR: target release now 2018 Q1)

VPC MongoosT-50 Throttle Update

VPC are continually pushing our desire to work as close as possible with the community to create the products that everyone wants to see.

It’s been made very clear to us that a high quality, multifunctional throttle unit is one of the community’s most anticipated products. As such we’ve realised our responsibility to provide our customers with a product that best meets their expectations.

We’ve been carefully reviewing the requests we received after our new VPC MongoosT-50® Throttle design was revealed, which led us to swapping a toggle switch for a 5 way mode toggle. This further increases the programmability found in the VPC MongoosT-50® Throttle.

We had also noted a very large number of requests for LED lighting on our throttle. Due to this, we’ve decided to redesign the housing, faceplates and electronics to accommodate the community’s desire for programmable LED lighting!

To facilitate these large changes to the VPC MongoosT-50® Throttle, we hugely regret that the target release date is now postponed until Q1 2018.

Updates including demonstrations of the LED lighting system will be revealed in the near future, along with confirmed release dates.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to provide feedback and suggestions on the design of our products!

Not surprising, really, but hey, they are listening to feedback, which is awesome. I'd rather wait a few months and get a better product.

that's a bummer. i really couldn't care much about a 5-mode switch and some fancy led lights ...

if that's all what the feedback came up with, then there was nothing wrong with the original prototype (disclaimer: didn't read any of the feedback, just commenting on virpil's statement).

As I am not in the market as potential early adopter anyway, the delay doesn't affect me. But listening to and evaluating feeback is generally a very, very good thing. While I may sneer at Saitek products for flashy LEDs, I can see how they are very useful for that build in switchboard in the throttle's base. Too many swiches to fumble around in the dark. As for that 5 way switch instad of a toggle switch, if enough potential customers were asking for it, chances are, they have a very real and practical use for it. Better they work this feedback into the design now, than to release a slight revision of the thing half a year after release, leaving early adopters in the dust.

I'm generally mroe interested in how the throttle's build quality will eventually end up.

I kinda get the LED, it's for visibility in a dark room, though I find I very quickly have the muscle memory thing kick in. There is also some noise for moving the thumb stick to the front of the throttle to use as an index finger analog stick.

I'm in the thumb stick camp, as I'm used to is from my CH pro, though I do see the point a lot of folk are making, as there are lots of buttons need the thumb, and having an analog stick there only increases the workload on the thumb, with a very underworked set of digits on the rest of the throttle.

Agreed - remember, most of the people buying it are DCS/combat flight sim folks, ED players will make up a small number of people purchasing this sort of hardware. Heck, most folk see a T16000M FCS setup as exorbitant in terms of pricing, try and explain why a base, with no stick, is worth more than an entire T16000M HOTAS... You need to be dedicated to go the high end HOTAS route, generally, DCS folks are, ED folks, mostly not to the same extent.

ED also benefits from having a very good control setup that works fairly evenly well with pretty much all types of controller, which means we have top players using XB1 controllers, KB & Mouse, and full blown $1000 HOTAS set ups.

Seen these pop up on my radar a few times. The devices look really good!

How is the software side of things? As in how much can you program the buttons/axes? Is there any scripting language used or can you only map these in ED directly?

I love the flexibility of the programming on my Warthog, but if this device compares it might be my next upgrade :)

Does the calibration software solve the issue with the brake paddle axis being a bit "short" by default? I.e. you cannot get full application of the axis.

Not sure about this one - I, sadly, have not had a chance to test it - too much work! I'd be curious though, if anyone can give it a go...

At the moment, it's just calibration, but there is a proper warthog-style programming function on the way.

In other words... Soon™

Good to hear! Will keep these on my radar I think. Do like the design of them, and potential dual stick setup is appealing :)

The first variant (no analogue thumbstick) is ready for production! Looks great if you ask me, and the rotary encoders will be really good to have for flight sims. I'm considering two of them next to each other for enough buttons and throttles to simulate most of a 737 ;)

For me I hope that can be used to assign the same buttons to different functions depending on where the 5 way switch is positioned. For example in a flight sim:

1. 3 encoders control altitude, heading and nav1 frequency, buttons control autopilot settings
2. 3 encoders control various navigation menu systems (rotary knobs in real life too), buttons control soft keys on the nav
3. 3 encoders control various copilot navigation menu systems...
4. 3 encoders control various engine and fuel settings + buttons and toggles
5. Hmmmm, I'm sure I'll find something ;)

Not quite as useful for Elite of course as there are a limited amount of things you can assign to physical buttons, but I'm sure I can find a use for this feature anyways ;)

Looks great, but I am more looking forward to the Constellation Grip.

That B9 button looks like it needs to be mapped to an energy bomb of some kind!

I do hope that all those hats that like like they are 4 way, are actually 4 way.

If so, then heck yeah!

Where does that quote from though? Do you have a link?

Sure do - right here, from the DCS forums.

On a side note, the WarBRD is on the website with a price - it'll be $200US for the base only. I was hoping it would be closer to the $150 bar, but I guess quality costs.
