Virtual Keyboard for the galaxy map??

Any word on this?

I think this has been requested pretty much since VR was first supported in ED.

The improvements to usability in VR of the galaxy map have come a long way over the time but this is still a major area that needs addressed.

Not happening unless oculus or vive include one.

haha, I just copied an earlier post of yours in another thread on the same topic, hope you don't mind me copying it here:

I asked a dev in a private message about that, and they replied saying no it won't be happening for specific reasons, so I have been practicing touch typing since.

This is the reply in full:

A virtual keyboard is not something we at Frontier would be interested in making for a number of reasons.

1) It's a rather large undertaking. The simplicity of it looking just like that dumb bit of plastic you've been using for years masks an underlying complexity in implementation.

2) We (and I also believe users) would prefer to rely on OS support for providing a virtual keyboard (like XB1/PS4/OSX/Windows) - though in this case, the 'OS' is the HMD vendor.

You didn't say which HMD you're using to play Elite - but I believe Vive already has support for this via SteamVR. I've not tried it - but i hear you can also 'peek' at your keyboard using the front-facing camera (though I also hear the quality's not great).

If you're using Oculus - You might be out of luck for now. I can't find any mention of support for a virtual keyboard - but I'd be very surprised if it's not already in the works.

Joystick/keyboard controls make navigating the galaxy map a whole lot easier.

You could also just lift the headset off your nose for a few seconds. I know that's not ideal, but until I can select a text box and input into it via voice, I don't know how else we can get round the problem.

I think a simple virtual keyboard is the next MUST-HAVE in VR - and now we have a fix for the colour banding, we should get on FD's case about not being able to type in VR at all.

Voice attack works for me. Clumsy but effective.

I'm a non native english voice attack user. Every time I install and configure it, I end up uninstalling it because 50-60% of the times it can't get my voice commands correctly with some bad side effects like not deploying chaff/sinks/scbs.
So I would love to see a virtual keyboard in game too. Virtual desktop already has a VK, but there's no way to make two apps to run at the same time in VR environment because ok missing multitasking.

I know a virtual keyboard will not be forthcoming, and I am not sure it is needed. What we need is a way to navigate both maps with as much as it is on a regular monitor. One thing that occurred to me, wonder if it would be possible, and in that case for FC to without too much trouble either make the maps plain and simple 2d, or a toggle to switch between 2d and 3d.. Because quite frankly.. just clicking a star.. ANY star is a major headache in the galaxymap. Only way to fix that is to make it 2d so that the regular mouse for other things than just the menu.

A year ago when I realised this problem with VR is comming I've learned touch typing, took me couple of months, but when I finally got my CV1 last month the effort paid off completely :)

Have you tried using Windows built in onscreen keyboard or one of teh many thri d party ones? I think even most virus protection / security software provides onscreen keyboards. I dont use VR but this might help someone.

CV1 does not support multitasking, actually. So there's no way to see two apps at the same time on the oculus' display.

I'd settle for them making the text input box FRONT AND CENTRE when you're typing (like you might see on a set top box). It's hopeless trying to type an look way over to the left to try and read the characters you've typed. Bring it closer, please!
