Virtual keyboard?

I've just got my HTC Vive set up to play ED without all the jitter problems that were apparent for some of us. I had a joyous 5 hours of VR ED last night but wanted to ask some of the seasoned VR players how you search in the galaxy map without removing your HMD. It was a huge immersion breaker for me last night to have to remove the Vive to type in search queries. Shouldn't a virtual keyboard be an immediate priority for Frontier to implement in VR mode?
I have also started using Voice Attack to implement basic commands like deploy landing gear etc. If anyone is aware of a way to search the galaxy map without having to use a real keyboard I'd be really grateful for your advice.
Thanks

Yep, I have already done this and can browse the galaxy map in VR bliss. I just can't search for systems without taking the Vive HMD off.

Time to teach VoiceCommand the able, baker, charlie alphabet.

I'd consider actually making it an alternate profile and using a voice command to switch profiles for typing.

Yes, I think you may be right. I will go through the Voice Attack manual this weekend and post any positive experiments here. I will petition Frontier for a virtual keyboard though. Thanks for your replies :)

Yeah, I don't think it would take much for a virtual keyboard to be added and would significantly improve my VR experience. Using a 'look and select' style interface would be great, with maybe the option to use Up, Down, Left and Right controls to move around the keys (all configurable through the Controls menu of course).

Hopefully, VR will get some more love again in the near future. Not for 2.2 maybe, but hopefully 2.3.

I have practically used any virtual keyboard under the sun and I still prefer physical keyboard.

But then again I have been touch typing for 23 years.

Is it not possible to speak the name of the system you want to travel to with Voice Attack? The keyboard issue in VR is a huge pain in the ass for me as well as I can't really touch type and I play in my living room not on a desk.

Only if it's already programmed in. If you just gave VA a random name the chances of it spelling it correctly are about nil. But you can programme the phonetic alphabet into VA and spell out the name.

Yup, I actually worked with a guy on VA forums to get this working. See example here:

"Spell" starts the vorec script for the A B C... recognition. "Endspell" turns the script off and enters the info.

The VA script download link is in the video. Download and take a look. It's self-explanatory if you know scripts.

@shadragon Thanks for your reply. I will try implementing your VA workaround and keep pestering Frontier to implement a proper virtual keyboard. Really appreciate your work on this and sharing it with us [up]

Can one not use the Vives front facing camera to peek at the keyboard?
Not that I've been able to find.

AFAIK, there's no way in Steam VR to configure a hotkey to activate the camera, other than the handheld controller.
Even if you could, the picture in Steam VR is very low resolution and stylized with false color. It's mainly just intended top keep you from running into walls or stepping on the cat.

To work well, the VR application would need to activate the camera and pass the picture through into the VR environment.
Or another 3rd party app would need to respond to a configurable hotkey and overlay a decent picture from the camera into the headset.

That would be enough, through the filter [I've only seen pictures of it, my Vive still on order] to see the KB, I don't actually look at the letters on the keys when I look at the KB, it's more a peripheral glance and hand placement and movement... I'm surprised the ability to open the viewcam isn't just a 'thing' the device does by default.
