You can certainly do it on the cheap, but you'll get what you pay for, especially in the areas of long term comfort. Sometimes, it's worth spending a little more. The top end companies spend a lot of time researching things like reducing nausea and motion sickness.

Caveat emptor.

StarVR have started talking about Location based Entertainment or LBE, i remember victormaxx doing this during the brief vr blip of the 90s - it basically means - its too expensive to be a home product or people just dont want it. i was one of the suckers who bought the VFX1 back then - i never learn :S

the phone vr boxes wont ever be PC worthy until there is a specific video input into the phone or some crazy fast direct wifi designed specifically for vr. Phone generated VR itself or self contained headset units may become the mass market killer tho.

i started playing with a pasonomi plastic "google cardboard" box in january, its not too bad with my wifes iphone 6s. tried to get it working for PC with all the various android streamers and my phone and it was just frustrating.

And this is the problem with a lot of cheaper VR kit- there aren't alternatives to OR or Vive which ED would currently support.

Sure, most would use a phone display to show the VR content so their use is to demonstrate VR and/or limit that to any VR app that works on whichever flavour of handset is used. But the display output from the PC currently uses either Oculus and SteamVR SDKs to deliver them to supported headsets, and whilst SteamVR is the most open to support third parties, currently that's just HTC.

But apart from not being able to do proper positional tracking, there is no way to current get what's on your PC to your phone in 3D suitable for those headsets without SDK support, and being able to delivery 90fps for a smooth experience.

Hence why you can buy most cheaply- but you'd get a cheap result too. So without being condecending, you'd be better off waiting for the prices to drop, because the minimum technology requirement is in the current generation's expensive headsets, but that expensive technology is not just an option, it's a mandatory requirement.

I have the Galaxy gear one, which is pretty good, except as soon as you plug it in, their software takes over and locks you in to their content. It's quite complicated to watch a normal 3D Youtube video. It's great the way that it uses all the phone's sensors to look around, etc. It also has some controls on the side to navigate menus, etc, which are useful.

I also have a cheap one from Ebay called Reim2.

It works quite well for watching 3D videos, so it should be OK for other things. You can still get the 360 deg look around if you can find some content that interacts with your phone.

I've only just started with these things. the potential is very good, especially for the Samsung one. The problem is finding content without having to keep paying. Much of the demo stuff is at a quality below what your phone could give if given the chance.

This is really good information , have been reading all your post , and learning heaps..cheers

I went through similar adventures getting ED running in VR on the cheaper side of things. Ended up going for the Zeiss VR One, running it with an LG G3 and flashed it with a light weight kernel. Also went as far as to write a set of VR shaders for it based on the SweetFX injector. The results were very good in all honesty, with the LG G3 resolution being so high and the Zeiss lenses being such high quality the end result was comparable with some of the higher end VR solutions, however not so much so in the head tracking department. Recently my work place got a Vive pre and I have to say, however much the visual quality isn't quite as good as my own setup (more probably down to the huge FOV on the vive and not the screen quality), the immersion level from the vive absolutely wipes the floor with it.

At $220.00 Australian dollars it not cheap! yet still impressed that your visual quality was better on ZeissVR , than the Vive pre,
wondering if others could others use your work in the , VR shaders

No not cheap, but cheaper than the commercial options lol. As for the shaders I used to have a thread here, in my sig, but for some reason it disappeared.

I've got the Colorcross. I can recommend it but had to cut little holes in the sire to fit my glasses in. I think it's got about half an hour wear time before it becomes uncomfortable.

'half an hour wear time before it becomes uncomfortable.' Cheers, have heard this , about the Colorcross , makes it a bit difficult to watch a movie

OP i thought ya was refering to something like the Oculus headset for phones so we would see people walking around with headsets on connected to the users phone.

I tried ZEISS VR ONE to watch some... lets call it movies. It was very... lets call it immersive.
I would recommend the VR ONE. The Colorcross wasn't nearly as good but costs a fraction of the VR ONE.
