Visiting the Thargoid bases in VR

I have been out in the void for 4 months and returned to the bubble recently, so so far i missed all the real stuff about our new alien neighbours.
For the last 2 days, a fellow CMDR and i were searching for Thargoid bases and technology to catch up on the events. Yesterday evening we had everything needed and entered a base.

We spent more than two hours in that base and the surroundings, inspecting all the incredible things to see and activating everything we could. There is so much love for detail in everything, while being massive in scale. The art team has done a real thing here. Incredible modelling and texturing work, besides great sound and ambient effects. The inhabitants seem to fullfil certain duties and we spent a while, following their work patterns, before leaving and exploring the exterior by SRV and ship.

So to everyone owning a HMD, if you havent seen a Thargoid base yet, get your things together and go there. Take your time, there is a lot to see and the quality of the work simply deserves more than a moment of attention. It is a breathtaking experience.

And a big thanks to the great team at Frontier, for creating this multimedia awesomeness.

OK, as someone who's been too absorbed with other stuff to pay any attention at all to the Thargoid stuff, give me a few pointers - systems to visit etc.

Huge spoiler alert but it's fairly well spoiled already unless you have been ignoring it all at great effort.

Will need one of the probes to open the door and both a UA and a UP to activate the machine.

I highly recommend a few of the corrosive resistant cargo racks from Palin.

I want to go but my refuse-to-grind policy has kinda hampered my ability as I have only unlocked two engineers! :D

I would love to see the sights and sites though.

ps
I heard there was an issue with UAs or UPs spawning, has that been fixed now?

No issue with ua and up's.

Have a fair few with the unknown links though, for some reason it doesn't seem to spawn if I'm in open or group. Only solo.

It's possible to do this without the anti-corrosive cargo holds although I'd recommend taking an AMFU along for the trip. Getting the UA is easy enough (e.g. from alien crash site on HIP 17862 6 C A, Coords: 30.3398, -98.5876) but the USS's required for the UP's are still proving hard to get as far as I know.

After 8 months out of ED following sale of my DK2 i've finally got around to getting the CV1 and I'm dropping in a 1080 today. I've been doing the same, catching up on events and visiting crash sites, generation ships etc and about to search for the stuff needed to activate the base and head on over to one myself. Can't wait. If anyone wants to wing up later its Cmdr Spencer Snr in game

Indeed it's definitely possible without the rack. I just recommend it.
I recommend Palin in general although getting the modular terminals for qwent was a right pita, and not the tasty kind.

Sure in the beginning the engineers where absolute waste. But it's been dialled down to more than comfortable levels.

And having a vulture with a jump range of 20ly.
700MW (BI-weave) and lowest resist of about 45%, and a boost speed of 510ms+
Is a right treat.
And that's just the highlights of my results.

I had fun getting it together and it's been fun having it ;)

If you mean, going there without corrosion restant cargo racks... Both my wingman and i had no access to Prof. Palin, so we took the risk and transported the stuff without protection. It was quite fun and actually presented some real danger. I hate grinding myself and my primary inention for each session is having fun. So, just do it!
I can say without doubt, that exploring the Thargoid base was one of the best and most fun sessions i had in Elite so far.

The spawning issues are not solved, i switched to Solo for about 10 minutes (per object) and got both needed objects that way without problems or delays. It was a bit annoying, but not affecting the experience in any way. Definitely worth the effort.

Just to be sure I understood correctly:

For entering a Thargoid base I need to have a UA and UP in the cargo hold.
For that anti-corrosive cargo holds are recommended.
Anti-corrosive cargo holds are only available from Palin who I need to unlock.
For unlocking Palin I need to unlock Qwent.
For unlocking Qwent I need to get a Sirius permit.

Is that about right? Sounds extremely tedious.

Nope, either one will do. You only need both in order to activate the "galaxy projector" at the heart of the base.

Not so tedious if you don't bother with the anti-corrosive racks.

P.S. you might enjoy reading about a little adventure I had with this a while back. I didn't have Palin's racks and it also contains a little tip about propping the base door open by leaving your UA just outside.

WARNING: contains spoilers

I did the Thargoid base without an anti-corrosive rack, purely because I didn't have access to them at the time when the 'Goid bases lit up. I quite enjoyed the sense of urgency it added to the expedition

Agreed. Grind upon grind, that's the only game play FD understand.

I ran out there to catch the tail end of the CG last night (HIP 18909) [only had my Oculus for a couple of weeks] and the base was staggering! I flew around it for 30 minutes almost afraid to land...what a great experience -

Anti-corrosive holds are not required. Just make sure you find a base close to Maia, and fit an AMPR. It won't protect you forever, but it's more than enough to get you there, look around, play with everything, leave and go back. The UA/UP need to be on your SRV when you visit, so all the time they're on the SRV, they're not in your ship, so it doesn't take damage.

GO take a look, it's great. And if you're stuck on exactly what to do in the base for maximum enjoyment, check the first page of the Canonn Threadnaught - it's all in there :)
