So, while waiting for my Vive order to go through (again) I've been trying to work out exactly how I'm going to use it. I've established that the room my gaming rig is in is theoretically large enough for room-scale VR, but that the gaming area isn't going to include the chair in front of the PC. This won't be a problem as far as using the HOTAS is concerned because cables and sofa, but I still use the keyboard for stuff like activating my FSD and navigating. Not averse to getting a cableless keyboard, but is there any way of using the wand controllers to fulfil any of my FSD and Navcomp needs? I'd make more use of Voice Attack, but for whatever reason it stops listening to me after about half an hour.
I haven't tried it, but I'd guess you can bind the various buttons to other functions like any other controller. That would be the grip button, trigger, and top button. The bottom button is reserved for bringing up SteamVR.
If you need more buttons, I wouldn't bother. I'd just pick a button on the HOTAS as a Shift key, and assign key combinations. For example, my Super Cruise button + Shift Button (pinky on the throttle) brings up the System Map. Similarly, my FSD Jump button + Shift Button brings up the Galaxy Map. My Heat Sink + Shirt = Silent Running. More combos than I need on a CH HOTAS.
I'll say one thing about the motion controllers. Using them in VR gets so intuitive, first time I played Elite after spending days in Room Scale, I noticed the texture on my arm and instinctlively tried to look at my arm by raising my hand.
