Vive - horrible, horrible fresnel lens bleeding

Going to move back to my DK2 for Elite. Vive is absolutely amazing on everything except this game, the bleeding/glare across the circles of the fresnel lens is terrible, it's like playing with dirty, water filled goggles!

Anyone else noticed this? Not sure it's the same Vive issues everyone else is talking about.

Yes. Just got mine today. Most other stuff is amazing but Elite is really horrible. I can't believe I'm preferring my DK2.

Not just the glare and bleeding but also jagged edges to everything. I am literally astonished I didn't see more complaints like this prior to ordering my Vive. But then I guess most people are seeing Elite in VR for the first time and they have no idea what it was like in a DK2 and so didn't have anything to compare it to.

yeah, people have been talking about issues with the Vive for some time now. Perhaps it's not getting the coverage it used to.

Fortunately Beta 5 (maybe Beta 6 too idk) has made improvements in some of the issues relating to text legibility. So when 2.1 hits, we should expect some improvement. Whether it's enough, idk...

On the positive side the Rift is just superb. Not sure what is going wrong with these Vives.
Unfortunately the god rays are even worse on the Rift.

Anyway, OP you might want to try turning down the UI brightness on the right ship panel and/or in the graphics settings. I can't say I've noticed the rings very much at all.

Never tried the CV1, but from what I read the god rays are worse. Seemed a real shame to have cured the SDE and introduced a totally new problem there

On the Vive at least if you turn down the brightness a little they go away, or at least get better.

I haven't had a chance to try this in Elite since I'm in the middle of re-arranging my office and screwing the lighthouses to the walls etc...

But just before I packed away the Vive I thought I'd check out the spare face foam that comes with it thinking it was just a replacement. It is in fact a different shape and is labelled Narrow Face. The foam that was attached to the Vive was labelled Wide Face.

I noticed significantly less fresnel light bleeding / glare from outside. I guess it depends on the shape of your face and also I think playing in the dark would also have the same fix.

Anyway.. I thought I'd mention it in case people weren't aware the second set of foam is different. I'm convinced most of the fresnel glare is causes from the outside world and not in-game. At least for me the Narrow Face foam blocked out almost all external light.

No. it's definitely in game. I have absolutely no light coming in (I was very surprised by this!) The combination of the mask fitting well and the additional rubber nose seal they added to the vive completely blacks out all light for me. You can tell it's in game as it is directly affected by what you are looking at. The absolute worse "flares" are caused by the two brightly lit panels over the pilot's lap. I really hope we get an option to turn off all the cockpit lighting so I can actually see out of the window again (without it looking like the final scene in 2001 ;) )

Issues with the Vive? Well, there are less today than last month and the FDevs are working on it. Mine looks a damned sight better on Beta 6 than ever. There are god rays on the CV1 as well so go ahead and dump the Vive. Those of us who are left will deal with it.

There's a proverb about the grass being greener. Go look it up.

Not a single person has said they are dumping the vive so need for proverbs thank you.

i have literally this minute ordered my CV1 ready for the new Nvidia 1080 coming out
which i will also be ordering
hopefully this will last quite a while

Nothing FD can do about that. Other games look better because they are less contrasty, i.e. no black space with bright sources of light inbetween.

There is a big difference to him going back to play one game in his DK2 and dumping his Vive. There is more to the Vive than just this game.

Exactly. I'm playing elite on DK2, because it's better on DK2. I'm playing everything else on Vive because it's amazing on everything else.

FD will fix it (the fix is simple, adjustable contrast), until then Elite is best played with a traditional lens, not a fresnel.
