[vive] - New GPU time

I agree but with that said the GearVR lens mod really does work well on both devices. They go from absolute rubbish lenses: blurry, low sweet spot with ring artifacts to crystal clear with very minimal god rays (hardly, if at all noticable). It is quite an upgrade.

How long did it take you to dial out the distortion on the Pro ?

I did the mod last night and uploaded grodenglaive profiles (tried 14/24/25) but the distortion was still pretty bad.

I figure that i will need to dial them in from scratch using the steam-vr-undistort tool that sencercoltu wrote.

Switched back to the fresnels for now [blah]

I did the mod and applied one of the profiles, then as with you, swapped it back. It was horrendous. Other than the warping the clarity of the image peaked my interest so as you mention I started from scratch and after a good few hours of tweaking got something I was happy with. It took a long time but was really worth it.

I showed it to my mate who uses a Rift, he couldn't believe it, the lack of god rays and overall clarity really impressed him. Stick with it is my advice.

Yeah im just getting used to the tool, once i have got the hang of it i will put the gear lenses back in and go for it.

That kind of just makes my point.

To improve the most expensive HMD, you need to buy another HMD, strip it for parts, and void any potential warranty you have on the both..

I'm not disagreeing, the vanilla lenses are utter trash and pro is very over priced. But for £20 on ebay you can buy the full kit - GearVR lenses and 3D prints - assembled. Damn does it look it good :D Really good, in fact. No more god rays and really nice clear optics. The lack of god rays is really nice in Elite in particular. Heres to hoping that the Rift 1.5 comes out this year, a higher res Oculus HMD with nice optics would be great, I'd personally drop SteamVR in a second and go back to Oculus Home - such a nice well made interface and Dash rocks!

HTC - Warranty? Are you having a laugh? They're theives the best I can tell.... thieves with no honour.

So I switched the Fresnels out of my Pro and put the GearVR lenses back in with a plan to build my own distortion profile having spent a few hours getting to grips with the tool. Didn't bother loading one of the community distortion profiles.

Thought I would take a look at SteamVR home quickly just to check for artifacts in the optical path after the swap and nearly fell off my chair...

With the original factory calibration profile there was only a hint of uncorrected distortion still present. SteamVR home looked mint.

Fired up Elite and could not believe what I was seeing. I cannot for the life of me understand why they did not persevere with achieving calibration for regular lenses in the research phase of development for the Pro. The difference is colossal.

I've been flying around trying to get my head around how good it looks. The clarity and detail is stunning - the field is flat and the coma that was present in the Fresnels is virtually eliminated. God rays gone.

I am now super motivated to dial out the last of the distortion. So stoked.

I'm glad to hear that you got some better results! The lack of god rays really does make a huge difference in Elite. Good luck with the rest of your tweaking.
