Vive regularly skipping frames except when graphics options are up

Hey all, I'm getting a very strange skipped frame bug. Frames are getting dropped at a very regular interval all the time regardless of what the graphics options are set to. Strangely when the graphics options menu is open everything is super smooth and no frames are dropped.

Here are some images of the skipped frame overlay warning to illustrate how steady the skipping is (using VR Low preset): http://imgur.com/a/0fdFx

My vive performs well in every other game I've tried (The Lab, Universe Sandbox, Fantastic Contraption, Tilt Brush, and even DCS World is pretty good). I've got the lighthouses anchored to the walls and head tracking is great. Running this all on a GTX970 and i5 4690k with windows 10.

Is anyone else running into this?

SOLVED: Disabling the steam in-game interface got rid of the skipping for me

This is recommended hardware below. Your system is under that and it sounds like you are suffering because of it.

What is your Steam VR Rating. (Link in my sig) Test it and see where you are at.

VR SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

WINDOWS PC

RECOMMENDED SYSTEM

OS Windows 7/8/10 64-bit
CPU Intel Core i7-3770K Quad Core CPU or better / AMD FX 4350 Quad Core CPU or better
RAM 16GB RAM
Video Nvidia GTX 980 with 4GB or better
Network Broadband Internet connection
HDD 8GB available space

I was able to get rid of the skipping entirely by disabling the Steam in-game interfaces. The VR High preset works great for me now even inside stations.

I think I had the same issue, which would kick in when starting elite within steam via a non-steam shortcut.

Turns out it was Steam's Desktop Game Theatre causing the problem, rather than the in-game interfaces in general. Here's a screenshot of the option that caused it: http://imgur.com/a/qq40r
If you still like to have the in-game steam overlay in other games, you could try just toggling that desktop theatre option off instead.

I posted a bug about this back in the 2.0 bug forum (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=248307), but might re-post it for 2.1. It feels more like a Steam bug though.

Ah that would make sense, I unchecked all three of those options. Thanks for pointing that out! I also have the non steam version and was launching it as a shortcut to the elite launcher made in steam.
