Vive / rift + GTX 1080

Anyone tried either with the new gtx 1080? Got one comin tuesday but not decided on vive or rift yet :/

Dude, 1080 + Vive or Rift and you will be grinning like an idiot either way.

VR is awesome even at dirty low settings..so powered by a 1080 which means you can whack the settings up = win.

Think he was asking if you had one not what it would be like to have one, do you have one?

The Founder Edition pre-orders from nVidia sold out yesterday in minutes. I don't think anyone has one yet apart from the various review websites etc.

Maybe Lee @Ars has one, maybe its gone back to nVidia now.

I'm running a 780GTX at the moment too, and will get a 1080 when my Rift is approaching (July/Aug)... Skipped the 980's.

Will be a big step up, even if it is "small Pascal".

I tried elite dangerous ( premium beta backer ) with the dk2 last june/july but only had 2x280x crossfire and it struggled abit, even so i could tell it was a game changer so i resold my dk2 to put money towards a better gfx card and retail version of rift/vive. Now my 1080 is coming tuesday - i was one of the lucky ones bought it at 13:57 - everywhere was sold out by 14:06 !! I know what VR is like, not played elite since i sold my dk2 the difference between a monitor - even eyefinity is that much i cant go back to my monitors! So, if anyone has vive or rift and has got a 1080 please give us your thoughts on how it performs... from what ive read the rift is my better choice for what i want ie seated simulators - odd fps.

Cool, didn't realise you were a DK2er, would have spared you the evangelising lol :)

Good article, but...

Again, the Vive and Rift are almost identical in performance. Saying one is better than the other depends on what you are doing and when. It is completely subjective.

Both have equal voices in the VR discussion and I hope FaceBook can crawl out of it's corporate mentality to embrace Open VR standards. It's the only way the industry as a whole will survive. VR is evolving and will continue to develop. These are first generation tech.

Room scale adds so much when not in Elite. My wife and I have friends over and make it a bit of a party with the Vive. VR Pictonary is a real and fun thing thanks to tilt brush and watching peoples reactions is almost as good as being in there yourself. Despite the current render bug with Elite, I am glad I got the Vive. It has turned into far more than I originally intended.

Plus, that first time you get up out of your pilots chair and actually walk around the bridge of your ship is something else! The bridge on the Anaconda extends far beyond my lounge room walls :D

Got a 1080 but no Rift/Vive yet, that's next on list. Still edging towards a Rift because of the better performance in Elite. For reference I set it to 3840x2160 with max settings - sitting in space gives 195fps :).

Knocking it down to 2560x1440 it touches 220fps - i.e. for running vr resolutions at max quality and locked at 90fps, it's not going to break a sweat.

How many fps do you get inside a Coriolis station?

I have a Rift and GTX 1080. I had to upgrade my Fury X as the frame rate was terrible even in VR Low. The game ran mostly at 90fps using the Fury x on VR Low with shadows/Oclusion and AA off but at 45 fps in a Res Site. Horrible to say the least!.

My new 1080 run the game at 90 fps at VR High settings with shadows and AA off. I have used the Oculus SDK (OculusDebugTool) to increase super sampling have have it running at 90fps on VR High at 1.25 (Pixels Per Display Override) and it looks great and runs well. I tried many options and the game is most stable at 1.25, it does run well everywhere accept a Res site at 1.8 with the occasional judder in a station. I can runVR Low and 1.6 and it still runs well all round. One thing to note is that Res Sites are very heavy on performance and even with a 1080 there is still a heavy load on your CPU. I believe Frontier are working on this and are aware of the issue. It seemed the combo of my 1150 socket 4.0Ghz i7 and the Fury x made this problem worse.

It makes me wonder if Elite Dangerous prepares pixels that are not on the VR screen, since you can still get stuttering with a 1080. This was supposed to prevent stuttering in VR by having that information ready before you turn your head. I don't have a 1080, but I noticed this only happens when I turn my head. If the devs didn't program the game to run that way in VR, then it seems like that could be the source of the problem. It could be possible that this game could have stuttering in VR, no matter what hardware you are using...

I noticed that people are still wondering why VR is supposed to have higher end hardware to support a smaller screen. It is supposed to be because it takes better hardware to render higher resolutions than the screen actually shows, to prevent stuttering...

Not quite true. VR requires extra horse power due to many reasons, but to name a few: Higher FPS requirement (90FPS), Stereo 3D rendering and rendering a larger FOV. Its not really about the screen size.

I am using CV1 with an MSI 1080 Gaming X (overclock preset) and Intel i7 6700k. I don't see any stuttering with VR High preset and rendertarget set to 2.0, except at the beginning of witch space and some very rare occasions here and there.

I have heard of rendertarget mentioned in steamvr patch notes, did you change it there or in the oculus software?
