Vive SteamVR vs Oculus Rift direct support performance.

Just thought I'd start a conversation about how the Vive might perform vs the Rift CV1 now that ED has announced native support for the Rift. I'm focusing on FPS and putting "usability differences" to one side.

Given that it seems pretty well accepted that the SteamVR (and it's overlay features) has a slight impact on ED VR performance with the DK2, I am interested to know how ED direct Rift CV1 performance will compare with the Vive / SteamVR combo, assuming the Vive uses the functionality rich SteamVR, and the Rift uses the more direct SDK1.0 without the SteamVR niceties.

Before I start any Vive vs Rift wars, let it be known that I have both on order, and I love them both for what each can do.

It seems to me that SteamVR offers many excellent features (such as the camera and chaperone etc), but in the case of ED, might these come at a slight performance cost which may impact on lower spec machines?

I have consistantly felt, that SteamVR should offer an option to bypass the extras if it improves performance for those that need it, albeit with bells and whistles disabled.

Should ED also support the Vive natively to maximise performance? Are we really talking direct OpenVR for the Vive, SDK1.0 for the Rift, and SteamVR for both, for those that want the extra VR features?

This assumes that SteamVR performance IS affected by it's additional features.

I am hoping to be corrected if I'm wrong.

I'm interested to know everyone's thoughts. I guess in a few weeks time, we will be in a better position to know the answers.
