Don't know if you guys saw this yet, but according to HTC, the Vive delay was due to a very, very big breakthrough that was big enough to warrant delaying the release for 4 months. It looks like the advanced dev kits being released in January were going to be the consumer release but they decided to make one last iteration to build in the new tech. Very promising... Now it looks like I will probably have to get both the Oculus (because it's also going to be awesome and first) and the Vive (because it's probably going to do things the Oculus won't).
