Excelent video VJ, and it is exactly how our wing operates looking for POI's. We learned this and other tricks just as you did, by trial and error. Our regular wing has been doing POI hunting since early January and your techniques are the same that we use.
However, this may be valid for a single player, but does not work reliably in a wing.
Our experience since January in a regular wing of three is that the POI may appear to everyone when we are at height, but the actual POI inside the marker may belong to any of the three of us, and may not pop, or appear, until the "Owner" of the POI is in the area and distance that causes it to spawn.
This also complicates things as the Loot that you find (say containers) may not appear to everyone in the wing, or we may all see something different (Instanced Loot as we call it). There will also be a much higher likelihood of the POI not appearing at the centre, but outside on the fringe.
Our regular routine in a wing of three is as follows. One marks centre at height and the other two dive in the fashion shown in the video. Once all three of us have entered the POI, it may shift and move depending on which one of us "Owns" the POI in question. The centre marker will move and we will then change our course and do a sweep of the POI to find what it contains. The centre pilot decends as we sweep in and lands at the centre that we use as a guide marker.
In many cases, a POI will contain more than 1 thing, because there are three of us. Sometimes we all see it, sometimes one or more of us may not because of the instancing. There has even been instances where we have 2 of exactly the same spawns in the exact same location. (For example, a small mining facility that 2 of us destroy all the mining extractors, and the third person then lands and sees all the blown extractors and mining fragments, as well as a complete duplicate of the unexploded mining extractors.)
Another complication in a wing is that if we find a data point of some sort, we all have to try to scan it. It is not a first come first served basis, and sometimes more than one of us will receive the intel packages.
Our wing has logged several bugs with FD and provided them with over 1.5 GB of detailed network logs from all three of us about all of the issues. It is our hope that from that they can see the issues and get it fixed and we hope that POI's for wings are made much better with the next update.
Until then, we hunt in a pack, but if you are alone, VJ's video is a great way to learn what we did the hard way. The only other thing that would make your hunting easier, is learning to read the wave scanner so you can tell what you are likely to find when you are on the surface from a simple glance. Be it data points, canisters, mining facilities, or other valuable items. The faster you can read it and know what it is, the faster you can decide if it is worth the time and effort.
Can't wait to see what you bring us next VJ
