Voice activated SHIP control for DK2 users

Hi All,

Thought I would share a Voice attack profile I just created. It will allow you to steer the ship via voice (in a very basic way). I enjoy hand flying as much as the next guy, but since I bought the TYPE-6 I have really enjoyed standing on the Bridge using the DK2 and issuing commands, it really feels like being on the bridge of a large naval vessel :)

Once I hand fly out of the dock, I can in theory, steer the ship via voice to the target star, engage jumpdrive, drop out of warp, steer the ship to the target station, steer while in supercruise and then engage the docking computer to land the ship. Under normal power I can also disengage flight assist, issue a command (eg right 10 degrees) then reengage Flight assist to stabilize the ship

Anyway, take it or leave it! Below are the commands and two links, one for the ship steering, the other for my full profile (3000+ commands)

For obvious reasons I have not included the voice pack. You need either A.S.T.R.A or Ivona, I use both combined.

Should also add mention, these commands are designed for the bigger ships. It may not be so accurate on smaller vessels due to different turn/pitch ability's.

My steering assignments

A - left turn
D - Right turn
SHIFT A- Pitch up
SHIFT D - Pitch down[/B]

These can obviously be changed to your liking

Commands -

Yaw right, right 10 degrees = ship will make a gentle right turn and stop with FA ON (Also good for small continues turns with FA OFF, reengage FA when you want the ship to stop)

Yaw left, left 10 degrees = Ship will make a gentle left turn

90 degrees to port = ship will turn left 90 degrees

90 degrees to starboard = Ship will turn right 90 degrees

Thrust down, descent thrust landing thrusters = Ship will apply gentle downward thrust (use FA OFF for continues downward thrust)

Open Climb, take us up Ship will apply gentle upwards thrust

Pitch down/Pitch up = Ship will pitch up or down around 7.5 degrees

Reverse course, 180 degrees Ship will apply a full 180 degree turn ( handy for when dropping out in front of a star)

https://www.dropbox.com/s/l8bd4pycrwz6xtg/SHIPS COMPUTER V1.vap?dl=0 (Full profile, warning contains many swear words!)

That's it, not perfect but does the job for now ;)

Yeah well, im waiting for DEC16 to see what things am I going to need really put in voice attack. I dont to pilot my ship by voice, but there wont be enough butons on my hotas for everything. Then Ill use VA. It still doesnt understand me very well tho.

Yeah, 99% of my flying is with my HOTAS, but it's kinda hard to reach my rudder pedals when I'm standing behind my chair! regarding VA understanding you, two important things, train your speech engine correctly, and make sure the 'command weight' value in Voice attack is setup correctly.

Cheers

Not a big fan of voice controlls for various reasons related to my preferences when playing the game, but I wonder if these controlls are really responsive enough whilst flying(?)

Ran into this very issue in the weekend, because someone asked me to record some footage of an imperial fighter, and since the cockpit would get in the way, I tried to do it whilst standing up - now the problem was that I couldn't reach my pedals (besides me being bad at flying spaceships) - hence I was forced to resort roll+pitch to change my angle, resulting in quite a messy recording. Would love to see these controlls in action.

Other than that, I think this offers a great opportunity for disabled people :).

Well I should probably make it clear for some people :) This is NOT designed as a replacement for your HOTAS or even those that fly Keyboard and Mouse. If you have stood in the Type-6 or Cobra with the DK2 you should know where I am coming from. You cant reach your Flight controls or pedal's. This is a simple solution if you want to steer in that situation.

If you only ever sit down in the rift then no need for this profile at all :)

Going back to your question, how this profile works is the same as keyboard flying, when you turn left you press the A key, how much you turn depends on how long you hold A for. With voice attack you can tell the computer exactly how long you want each key to be pressed. With this method you can have extremely accurate steering commands.

Again, this is just a simple solution to have fun with. I could make it extremely detailed/complex and accurate. I could even create complex maneuvers, however that is not the point of this profile.

EDIT - I never though about disabled people, it could easily be modified for very accurate flying, combat wouldn't work, but trading and sightseeing would be fine.

No worries - never read your post as claiming to be a replacement for a Hotas - I usually just stop or fly in a straight line when walking around.

I just wondered about its responsiveness. In my case, saying "yaw 10 degrees" certainly wouldn't have helped - it would have simply taken too long to say it.

But applying 100% left yaw for as long as I say OOOOOO and 100% right yaw for as long as I say EEEEEE could have helped in the above scenario, given it reacts quick enough (although I would probably feel to awkward to even try ;))

Ah ok, maybe I didn't type it out too clear. You don't have to say 'Yaw 10 degrees' I separated the commands with a comma in my first post.

So you can say 'Yaw left' or 'Left 10 degrees'

Since it's voice attack anyone can change the command very quickly. You could say 'Apple's' and it will still carry out your command.

It works very well with flight assist off. I can say 'Yaw left' the ship will slowly carry on rotating left until I want it to stop, I will simply just say flight assist on to stabilize the ship.

You are like a voice attack ninja!

I got a quick question for you. I used a request docking command from you (thanks a lot) when I used trackIR, it temporary pauses trackir and goes through the menus. Now that I got DK2, do I have to turn my head to open the left menu and then request docking with a voice command?

You do still have to look at the menu when requesting docking. I increased the speed of the request in my new profile. Also added a function to lock the star and engage the FSD. Just scroll to the star and say 'Lock destination and jump'

Hopefully they will add hot keys for this stuff in the future.

Got it.

I've actually tried various forms of voice controls, starting with MS gamevoice ~2000.

I personally just prefer a setup that is completely incompatible with it (very loud speakers, music & mumbling speech are not an ideal mix for VA), so it's just me.
The question I'm curious about is if it allows for modelling of analogue axes based on vowel, duration & volume.

Apologies - my fault - my ability to express myself precisely is sorely lacking in English.

Oh ok, I understand now. I don't think Voice attack is that advanced. It really only recognizes the word you say and then translates that into any key stroke or multiple key strokes (also plays any sound or MP3/WAV file. I can only assume the developer will continue to improve the product.

Regarding your setup. My main PC is in my home cinema room, the room has a pretty huge surround sound system, even though I have headphones and a mike, the games sounds and my music is still blasting around the room, fortunately my nearest neighbour is too far away to hear the noise! I don't have any trouble with Voice attack understanding me, I speak at a normal volume, sometimes can't even hear myself say the words at times.

The most important thing with VA is to ensure you spend at least half an hour training the speech recognition. Second thing is to adjust the 'Command weight' option in Voice attack, this filters the background noise depending on your setup.

Thanks for the the info and advice - but I've actually tested the trial and it really doesn't work well since I use a cheap desktop microphone and my speakers are usually cranked up so loudly, I literally can't hear my own word.

I may get some microphone clip or a throat microphone once they implement modelling of analogue axes based on vowel/amplitude/pitch, though.
