Voice Attack shutting down when playing ED.

Hey there,

Wondering if anyone has experienced this same issue. It's not a huge issue as it doesn't crash the game or anything but Voice Attack keeps shutting down about every 10 minutes or so and is really annoying. Sometimes I can go an hour without it shutting down but most of the time it shuts down several times every game session.

So, a couple of things that may be clues.
1) On startup Voice Attack tells me it has detected Nahimic app. I've searched for this app on my PC but can't find it.
2) When I launch ED I often (most of the time) get little pop-ups appearing stating "Unhandled Exception: Object reference not set to an instance of an object." This error box pops up repeatedly, up to a dozen times during the ED startup process. Then it stops. It doesn't seem to affect the game at all, but it's there (screenshot attached).

I don't know if 2) above has anything to do with VoiceAttack crashing.

Has anyone come across this? Any ideas?

Chris

Don't know if the VoiceAttack issue is connected. Don't think so, as I run VA, and it's fine. But I did have the launcher error.

The launcher error is a .Net Framework issue, and support helped me out. Two things to try, and I'd suggest doing them in this order especially if you are running Win10.

Option 1. Go to C:/Program Files (x86)/Frontier/EDLaunch and you'll find a file EDLaunch.exe.config Back up this file.

Then open it using Notepad and look for the following lines
<supportedRuntime Version="v2.0.50727"/ >
<supportedRuntime Version="v4.0"/ >

Switch the lines so they look like this:
<supportedRuntime Version="v4.0"/ >
<supportedRuntime Version="v2.0.50727"/ >

Save the file (make sure it's still a .config file, Notepad has a habit of saving it as a Notepad file which might cause issues), and that should solve the error. If it doesn't (it did for me) you can simply revert to the original copy of the file you backed up.

Option 2. Try fixing the .Net framework.

a. Turn off .Net in Windows Features.
b. Open Programs and Features and uninstall everything starting with Microsoft .Net. (There was nothing to uninstall when I did this.)
c. Download and install Microsoft .Net Framework
Restart computer - and you will probably be asked to restart in some of the previous steps also.

Note - This did not work for me, as there were no .Net things to uninstall, and when I tried to install from the download it told me a later version was already installed. However, the first solution did work in resolving the issue.

As to VoiceAttack, not sure what to suggest, but it sounds like the nahimic app that it's detecting is more likely to be the problem.

HTH with the launcher issue.

Thanks for that...I think editing the config file might have worked. Haven't had the error for a couple of days.

Wish I could say the same for the VoiceAttack issue, that's still there so I'm guessing it's not related.

No biggie, and thanks again.

Why didn't I think of that??? :)

Thanks Strontium Dog. It's right there. Only problem is the files are in System32 folder only and I'm not sure about just deleting them. Nahimic doesn't show in uninstall list. Wondering if it came with my ROG hardware...I've seen that in some posts.

Heading out so I'll have a look later, but thanks for the lead.

you should be able to temp disable it from the same menu and maybe from the startup tab stop it booting just to experiment on it 's effects

So I did that and it seemed to work for a while but then shut down again after about an hour which is better than normally. I'll give it another try.

Thanks

when you temp disable does it re-enable itself after a while or stay disabled?
when you did disable it, it did not crash or stop the system so I would delete it but
I would create a usb system restore disk first,just in case and then delete it

No, it stayed off when I restarted my system. No CTD. Haven't played today so will test again tomorrow.

Thanks again

I've been trying to crack the crashing launcher issue for a while and EUREKA, your option 1 fixed it. Many thanks.

I had the same issue with VA. It looks like it was an issue with my headset. Got an error when loading VA that it couldn't change audio device because "Device ID invalid", even though it was set correctly to my headset. Went into the audio settings and just pressed "Change Now", even though I hadn't made any changes.
That seems to have fixed the issue for me. Hasn't crashed since.

I stand corrected. VA crashed again.
Found this elsewhere and this seems like a possible solution, specifically the latter part:
Audio Tab - Ensure the "Set windows default audio" playback and recording boxes are check and set with the Change Now button. And make sure the Audio Output type is set to Integrated Components.

just in case its not that
goto VA options spanner then system/advanced tab
enable and set sleep mode to 10000
or disable windows sleep mode

So, none of the above helped unfortunately. Still crashing.
From the Windows Event Viewer there seems to be something wrong with the ntdll.dll module. That's reported as the offending module every time VA crashes. No clue how to fix that, as it could be a multitude of different issues apparently :(

yea a tricky one normally accosiated with an out of date driver in my experience, its amazing how many peeps say yea all my drivers are all up to date
then you check there sound card driver and then headshake & facepalm
(tip when doing soundcard drivers let the pc boot up once with the device removed or disabled b4 installation(eek wot no sound!) as like the ol soundblasters I think it better to start on a fresh interrupt request and registry)

I think I found the solution yesterday. Turned off my joystick(s) in the settings, not just in the interface. Left VA on all night and it was still running this morning.
So something is up with my joystick, but luckily I don't use it anymore as it started to act up.

I have VA crashing issues as well.. The crash for me, was linked to the EDDI plug-in, and not yet resolved there...

I wrote a batch file to continually check if VA was running, launch it if not... That way if it crashes, it will restart within a few seconds. I do not recommend (despite its pleas!, running VA (or ED) as administrator...

I start VA using the batch, then when I'm ready to quit VA, quit the batch window then quit VA itself...

contents of RunVA.bat:

@echo off
echo "Launching VoiceAttack"
:launch
"C:\Program Files (x86)\VoiceAttack\VoiceAttack.exe"
echo VoiceAttack Failed
ping localhost -n 5 >nul
echo "Restarting VoiceAttack"
goto launch

(added a few mins later.. If you launch thet batch file through a shortcut, you can set the properties of the shortcut to launch the command window with only a few rows and colums, and in a particular place on your screen...)
