Newcomer / Intro Voice Attack

Depends how you play...

It's only $10, and you can download it to try out for free with a limited number of commands to see whether you'll find it useful. I played in VR, and it was invaluable - necessary I'd say as I couldn't easily use the keyboard. :)

If you have specific questions, ask away.

I intend to buy voice attack and william shatner addon and ships cat too! Just wondered what the other members experiences were?

I use va and have hcs voice packs in addition.

Thus means all my bindings have a voice activated command meaning I don't have to memorise a whole bunch of stuff that I rarely use but which is important.

Is chaff "c" or "ctrl c", ditto shield cells.

Invaluable and well worth it.

I dont quite understand how it works yet. Do you have to reprogram your key bindings?

No, it creates a custom bind file you use to control, depending on your usual method.

E. G. I have a saitek x52, and it's created a custom file called Saitek Custom. I select these bindings in settings and you are gtg.

Don't bother with the cat it is boring.

Get the parrot and set it to profane - funny as f...

Whoever voiced D.A.R.K. really did a great job of impersonating Spock.

Use it with headphones.
If you use it with speakers it may recognize sounds from the game or music you play as commands.
I once had my ship parked in a hangar and forgot to turn off the microphone, had music playing in the back and left the room. When I came back I was in a detention cell and had to rebuy my ship.
Checking the logs showed that Voice Attack recognized the command "Launch" from the lyrics of the music and launched the ship and it was destroyed for loitering inside the station.

Ok, my experience....

VA + HCS Voice packs are awesome. I have about a dozen.
ASTRA is (or was) the most comprehensive and is full featured (things like quotes from Steven Hawking etc which not all packs have).

As others have said, you need key bindings for pretty much everything and mine have been set up way before HCS included some binding "help".

The hardest part of the whole she-bang is getting Windows to reliably interpret what you say...so you do need to go through the Windows based voice training.
I needed to do this a half dozen times due to my accent...YMMV...find it here...

The next hardest part is remembering what commands you can use, so download and printout the pdf which comes as part of the downloaded pack.

Well I bought everything I need and the hardware (4 port hub and usb desk microphone) arrived today as well. I had an issue with the SW downloads but got sorted in the end. I bought the cat because we have 5 cats and I was under strict orders to put at least one cat in the ship! So I complied.

The cat is good and well worth £1.50 for a laugh or two. As a cat lover I simply could not refuse.

It took me around 6 hours from arrival of hardware to installing voice attack and william shatner as orion and installing the cat and playing with it.

But it is strange because I feel like I am touching on something very significant here. Voice driven gameplay is really a new experience for me and I have to say that I am overall very impressed and can see it is the future.

My only real concern is that it is detecting speech when there is nothing there. And sometimes doesnt hear me at all.

Problem is probably down to the desk microphone.

If you are using headphones then you just need to get the mic level right for you (or use headphones with a boom mic).

If you are using speakers then the mic picks up the audio from that and if it is a condenser mic then no matter what you set the mic level to it probably will always be awkward.

I use a surround-sound speaker system with my PC and I spent a lot of time experimenting with all sorts of mics (I have a lot of different ones for different uses) and not even the most directional condenser shotgun mics provided a workable solution. In the end I have come to use a dynamic mic (like vocalist's stage mic) mounted on a cantilever arm - the cardioid pattern of the dynamic mic gives enough directionality to discriminate between my voice in front of it and the front sound stage of the computer system behind it.

Alternatively, you can get over the "false-positive" issue by using a "trigger word" that VA needs to hear before actioning the rest of the audio - you can also use a hot-key to turn off and on VA listening to the mic. (I use the num lock key if I want to prevent VA listening to me on the phone / coughing etc - the Num Lock light on the keyboard tells me if VA is listening or not.)

As well as training the speech engine many times I also think I want to set a word or two to confirm I am talking to the AI. How do I do this? For example "computer" and then what I want to say. I am trying to get the AI to avoid picking up bachground noise from my usb desktop mike.

VA is a great piece of software. Setting it up and getting it to do exactly what you want takes a bit of effort, but once you understand it, it gets easier. The free version is more than enough for Elite Dangerous. The only reason I bought the full version was to thank the developer for this little masterpiece. I highly recommend it. The only downside is that you must use headphones and be in a quite place for it to work and I hate not hearing the game with my 5.1 bass monster speaker system.
X.

Strangely I find that when I try and voice control the 4th panel tabs it seems to go to random tabs after doing it perfectly initially today. All else seems good but it is early days. I now have a headset and mic rather than speakers and desk mike and have been training the speech engine.

As I understand it the problem with the panel tabs is because during a session they remember where you were when you left that panel and next time you open the panel you start at that location not the original Default location, you possibly need to come up with a way to get back to that default as you leave the panel.

Note I don’t use scripts, macros or VA so am probably spouting rubbish.

Eg If I say status I get to the fourth panel and it shows status (BTW what is the first tab fourth panel called?). But when I try and say the tabs names it highlights a different tab each time. Rarely getting it right.

Ok now after a restart all is good except for the inventory tab and I am beginning to suspect that it is to do with my fleet carrier. I dont think VA or HCS Voicepacks are yet updated after the fleet carrier introduction?

As long as you close the panels by saying "Close Panel" or you order it to do somehting else then you should have no issues. Problems arise when for example one has inventory open and then manually switches to map or something - HCS then on next being asked to go to a nested panel on that UI may not start from where it thinks it is. There is a command to reset all panels - "Run Diagnostics".

Do all the voices do the same thing or are some better than others? I had Orion and now also have Apollo as it is on special atm. I want to get the best immersion by having the AI keeping me informed and Apollo was recommended. So I thought I would give it a go. But what does Apollo do that Orion doesnt? Or any of them?

It is all detailed on their forum - here you go:

Ignore the posted on date and last edited by date - each pack is up to date with a list of all its features.

EDIT: I don't know who recommended Apollo to you, you should block them in my opinion. ;)

P.S. Kate and DARK are good value at £4.99 each - You might like Jazz's accent but I find her almost as grating as Minus and Vasco - Eden was my first and along with Celeste gets a lot of use. At £1.49 you really should get the Ship's Parrot - just make sure there are no kids around when you enable its profane mode - it is incredibly funny. On the humorous side Cleo and Leo (the two Hollys from Red Dwarf) are worth the time but Archer is annoying and Cecil takes some getting used to (dipsomaniac).

P.P.S. - Yes I have a lot of voice packs - blame the sales - makes for lots of variation in crews.

P.P.P.S. - Unlike the in-game covas, you can use your voice-pack in multiple accounts.
